COMPETITION: Victoria Crossman Kids

A couple of months after I had accepted that having the BRCA gene mutation was just part of my make-up, I started to seek out others in the same predicament.  And I immediately noticed a curious thing.  There was something different about BRCA girls.  And today, with a number of BRCA girls getting in touch for moral support (as well as for hormone and bra advice), I continue to notice this identifiable streak.  It’s a drive, a passion for life and a certain unique determination that nothing in this world will rock them.

So it didn’t surprise me at all to hear (via email) that two of those brilliant BRCA girls (sisters in fact) have launched a stunning children’s soft furnishing company retailing detailed, colourful and fun prints for children.  Beautifully designed by Victoria and cleverly marketed by Charlotte, Victoria Crossman Kids has only just launched is already a BIG favourite in our house.

Mini uses her butterfly bag for ballet and tells me that it’s perfect ‘because it’s NOT pink.

Made of a heavy cotton twill but with waterproof lining, I thought the drawstring swim bags (£25) would make brilliant reader prizes so I’ve persuaded the sisters to throw one Princess and one Knight design in my direction.

All you have to do to enter this competition is tell me where the Victoria Crossman Kids designs are printed.  The answer is on this page and please email the answer to Charlotte@victoriacrossmankids.co.uk before Wednesday 23rd October to be entered into the prize draw.

Follow Victoria Crossman Kids on twitter to hear first which items the sisters are adding to their rapidly expanding collection!

BaByliss New Big Hair: happy (hair) days

I want to sing from the rooftops – except that I can’t sing and have no idea how to actually climb onto my roof. Or I could send an urgent memorandum to all women in the country – but, of course, that would be spam.  So instead I’ll just have to write another blog post.

But listen up, as this time, I come bearing great, wondrous (hair) news.  The genius techies at BaByliss have gone and surpassed themselves this time with the recent launch of their New Big Hair: rotating soft-bristled ceramic-barreled styler…. phew… I feel better just imparting the news of such thrilling times.

this could quite simply change your (hair) life

this could quite simply change your (hair) life

I had heard how good the original Big Hair version was – via Provence.  A school friend of mine has always had perfectly coiffed hair.  In fact, I remember after lacrosse one day her showing me how to set hair in rollers, properly, Steel Magnolia style. The surrounding sheep and cows in deepest darkest Kent had never seen anything quite so glamorous. Anyway, she was the first to give me the BaByliss Big Hair heads up.

So I begged the PRs to send me one and in it trotted, shooting hot (but not too hot) air to the roots of my hair as it strutted up the stairs to my bedroom.

it rotates both ways

As recommended, I used it on 80% dry hair and experimented on Mini’s thick mane as well as my own much finer /more fly-away version.  The rotating brush and hot air calmly smoothed without the hair knotting nor blood draining from my arm – as it tends to when I try to impersonate my hairdresser.

So today’s news is that FRIZZ has departed my life – in its place I have nothing short of killer voluminous locks along with some serious shine and kick-ass body.

Mini and I both looked like we’d ‘just stepped out of a salon’ and high fived each other at our new effortless live-in stylist.

Don’t wait a second longer – purchase this winner here and join me on the roof.

Bow Lane Dental Group: mixing teeth with family

‘Open a little wider’, said my new-ish brother-in-law.  I looked up at him, through my huge green specs, and realised we had been right to welcome him so warmly to our ever-increasing clan of outlaws.

If you have ever watched the American TV drama Brothers & Sisters, you’ll know exactly what I married into.  As they say, you can’t choose your family but coming from a two up two down family unit, I still pinch myself with excitement at the enormous scale of siblings-in-law I have on His side.

And the most recent to join our throng is EXACTLY what we were lacking.  An ology: a dentist!  Except that James Goolnik is so much more than the average dentist.

12 years ago he founded Bow Lane Dental Group and fundamentally changed dentistry in the UK. The clinic, a far cry from the Harley Street experience I know only too well,  feels different from the moment you first set foot inside.  It’s elegant and yet modern, informal and relaxing – almost spa-like in atmosphere. There’s no bad dentist smell nor heavy, antiquated English drawing room feeling while the practice, unusually, offers the complete range of dental services on these premises.

But what struck me most was the focus on the patient as a real person, not just another set of gnashers.  From the receptionist to James, everyone in this attractive building is singing from the same sparkly-white hymn sheet.   Probably not a surprise as James is the exclaimed author of Brush, the business handbook for entrepreneurs, not just dentists.

James gave me a full mouth comprehensive examination, checking the health of my teeth, gums and all soft tissues. He checked for oral cancer and did a bleeding score of my gums.

Then we both whipped out our cameras.  He took two digital X-rays to check for decay and the bone levels around my teeth before snapping some digital photographs of my mouth to record the gum levels and monitor any recession.  And I snapped right back at him.

Before I was escorted up to meet Emma, one of his hygienists, we discussed (about 50) shades of white. I had never even considered having my teeth whitened and now it’s ALL I CAN THINK ABOUT.  Anyway, Emma did a great job of blasting my mouth stainless using a prophy jet air polisher (hold on tight – it’s pretty close to a sandbaster!) as well as all the usual hygienist cleaning.

Family-aside,  I dropped  down into busy Bow Lane more than a little impressed by the degree of teeth sparkle and dental peace of mind my visit had left me with.

My appointments with James and Emma would have cost  £220 (90 mins).  I don’t need to see Emma for another 6 months and, although I’ll probably see James this weekend, I don’t need to drop my jaw for him for at least another 18 months.

For all my readers who need Bow Lane Dental services, James has generously offered you a 25% discount off this 90 minute combined comprehensive check and hygienist appointment if you book your appointment by the end of October.  Quote: Life of Yablon when you call 020 7236 3600 or email reception@bowlanedental.com
