Herman Ze German: Old Compton Street boasts German sausage

As usual it was up to me to find a venue, but initially I wasn’t reviewing.  We needed somewhere central to meet and discuss work projects without any pomp and ceremony.  Oh and with ‘proper beers’.  So I suggested Herman Ze German straight away as it’s definitely a place where boys drink beer and eat sausage.  The only issue I could think of was that it might lie in the unbookable camp.

Twitter reliably informed me that the Soho branch (the other one is on Villiers St) does take bookings.  So, the deal was done:  we would meet, drink, eat, work and then drink some more.  And I would also review.

With my online consultancy hat on, I had my nearest and dearest round the table.  The web boys, I call them.  And they’re fun ESPECIALLY when they drink beer.

We sat downstairs which felt like a good idea simply based on the fact that upstairs feels a little transient.  Grab a sausage before it grabs you, type place.  Herman Ze German, if you haven’t heard of it before, is THE new German dog place.  On the wall behind our table, an episode of Bayswatch was being projected and, along with the 80s sound track, it all felt pretty kitsch.

We ‘worked’.  Exciting future plans were discussed and then we ordered more beers (Paulaner Helles lager on tap).  That’s when the ideas really started flowing along with some less impressive humour.  It seemed food was required: 2 of us had the Bockwurst in a roll (£4.95) while the others opted to have their sausage chopped with chips.  Actually, Herman’s pommes frites were SILLY delicious. I presumed they must be triple fried to taste that good but it turns out the Germans have a proved themselves to be geniuses once again by steaming and pressure cooking these beauties.

Noone’s iPhone left their hand, as we flitted over social platform updates, the latest in subtle brand sponsorship and a whole new concept in socialising with social tools.  The rest is a blur.  A message popped up on my screen;  a friend of mine, in Soho, was offering a lift home.  Saved by a tweet, I jumped ship before it got messy.

The web boys gave Herman Ze German’s food a rockin’ 7.5 out of 10.

Hampstead Theatre: Raving mad or raving true?

I didn’t fancy dinner out in a fancy restaurant on my birthday.  No, I’m blatantly spoilt from eating out too much.  But, when Lady Y suggested that they could accompany us to local Hampstead Theatre to see the new production, Raving, I agreed immediately.  Contemporary, local, cultural and easier on the, now aged-42, waistline.

He needed no convincing. Robert Webb (Peep ShowMitchell & Webb) really makes him chuckle and, as we cozied into our seats in this small but perfectly formed theatre, we did find the play pretty amusing.  But I’m surprised we did, because Simon Paisley Day’s debut play is real.  Very real.  It’s funny AND it’s real which means that we (the members of the audience who are approx. our age) are basically laughing at ourselves.

Raving rehersals

Raving rehersals

In short, three couples, who escape parenthood for a weekend away in remote Wales, touch on subjects such as marriage, control, temptation, identity and self-esteem as proper rural emotional chaos descends. Tamzin Outhwaite deserves a special mention too as she plays a brilliant right-on-the-edge Briony, without falling flat on her face.

Lady Y laughed but Lord Y didn’t.  I could tell that he thought it wasn’t worth watching.  The truth is that he didn’t realise how real (as well as really funny) it was.  We roared and you probably would too.

Hampstead Theatre: RAVING call now as it’s almost fully booked.

Elisa Strauss: New York’s Cake Celebrity

cakes cakes cakes with Elisa Strauss

cakes cakes cakes with Elisa Strauss

I’m often asked where my introductions, restaurant tips and hot gossip comes from.  Of course, the daily 100 or so emails from the best informed PRs are a huge source of information but I  should also add that a couple of ridiculously-connected, ear-to-the-ground friends do tip me off regularly.  One of them asked me if I’d like to meet Elisa Strauss while I was in NYC.  A quick Google search and the answer was a BIG yes.  So here is the other interviewee I absolutely wanted to track down before I jetted back to the UK.  As she is a college friend of said-connector, I had the perfect intro.

In cake circles, Elisa is a proper, full-on celebrity.  Not only has she made and exquisitely decorated cakes for the rich and famous, she has featured on numerous TV shows, written best seller cake cookbooks and teaches at international culinary schools.  And her latest venture, teaching online tutorials, has her facing the camera, tools in hand most days of the week.

I was thrilled she had time (between filming) to invite me into her kitchen on the Upper West Side so that we could chat about her edible works of art and her enormous success to date.

Before starting her bakery, Elisa had worked as a textile designer at Ralph Lauren (and this is very relevant when you see the stunning handbag cake creations she has designed). While working in fashion, Elisa attended pastry school at Institute of Culinary Education and graduated with a degree in baking and pastry arts.

Her business, Confetti Cakes, enjoys a cult cake-loving following – while she also consults for a number of food brands looking for her artistic injection.  We laughed at the kids-husband -work-balance we all strive to achieve and I simply adored her company.  She’s just as a baker should be: warm and fun … oh and doesn’t take herself too seriously at all.  Except this is no average cake-baker, I doubt there’s very little Elisa wouldn’t be able to turn into a cake masterpiece.

Here is my interview with Elisa:

Who/what inspires you in your amazing cake designs?

Everything in design and architecture. I’m a tear sheeting fiend. I love textile design, any pattern!

How many cakes do you bake a week?

Right now I have been focusing on online videos both on Craftsy.com and on my YouTube channel- some weeks are planning weeks and other weeks I am working on 10 different projects- cookies, cupcakes and cakes. It’s a hectic schedule.

How often do you eat cake?

I prefer breads and harder pastries- but of course I need to take part in quality control. And I LOVE our cakes recipes, especially when I’m tired, I will be found shoveling in a slice of cake

Which design was the most challenging?

Hard to choose … probably the Victorian House cake we made for a couple for their wedding- we needed to match the paint chips in frosting.

Who would you love to make a cake for?

Jeff Koons- I love his art and I would love to replicate it in cake and have him enjoy it!

How do you relax?

Hot yoga and reading late at night

Where do you love to eat in NYC?

Its hard to narrow it down- so many favorites. Peacefood for Breakfast, Chelsea Market for Lunch and Locanda Verde or ABC Kitchen for dinner

Do you have any London cake plans?

I LOVE to visit London- I would first visit Peggy Porschen’s Parlour and just take in all the other little adorable shops too.

What feels you with fear?

Letting my daughter ride her scooter in NYC

What is your dream?

To have a farm house and have time to paint

Tell us a cake secret.

When working with cake make sure it is cold- it’s much easier to handle.

While it seems that Elisa no longer takes cake orders, luckily for all of us, she has provided an excellent resource in her books. She still very busy teaching online classes like a Designer Handbag Cake or a Sculpted Dog Cake and also holds some private classes. Check out her website for more information.

Indie Lee and her force of nature

The Lucerne hotel on the Upper West Side

The Lucerne hotel on the Upper West Side

While planning my weekend in New York, I was keen to make time for a couple of interviews.  Two inspirational woman, actually.  Indie Lee was one of them.  Her name came up during my interview with Liz McCarthy, as she had recently decided to launch Indie’s range of natural eco-luxe skincare products on her beauty site, A Beautiful World.

Liz promptly handed over some of Indie’s Squalane Oil for me to try. I was curious.  What in god’s name is it?  Turns out that until the age of 26, Squalane is naturally present in our skin.  But once we don’t produce it any more,  our skin starts to lack elasticity, even surface colouration – and this oil can quite literally reboot our cell regeneration and oxygenation.  From that moment, I became more and more interested in Indie Lee‘s beauty products, and her personal story behind them.

So, on the Monday morning, she swung by my hotel, The Lucerne on W 79th/Amsterdam, and we popped out to a cool little coffee shop called Irving Farm so that I could get the low down.

With my jaw on the table, I learnt that it took a life-threatening brain tumour for Indie to learn the valuable lesson as to the dangers of environmental toxins.  Indie being Indie decided to do something about this.  Only five minutes into my interview, I realised she is more than just a business woman.  She is, quite literally, some force of nature. Her story, her products, her passion, her motives…. I was utterly sold.

Doctors had told her to ‘get her affairs in order and say her goodbyes to her husband and children’ before her surgery.  But on 22nd April 2009, she awoke to a new lease of life and a uncontrollable desire to create eco-friendly, all natural yet divine-looking face and body products.  They are luxurious and, most crucially, SAFE.

Indie takes huge pride in the greenhouse she has built in her garden, testament to her ‘go natural’ mission.  She almost lost her life to toxins and chemicals and wants to urge us to make the switch too.

Not only is she absolutely right but she’s also a woman I wouldn’t choose to argue with.

Indie Lee’s range is now available on A Beautiful World.  Shop away.
