SKATE at Somerset House on The Strand.

If you fancy yourself as a glamorous skater, head to Somerset House as their annual ice fixture, from this Thursday (14th November), will be ready to help you glide into this year’s Christmas season.

a very keen Small – heading there first thing yesterday morning

Small and I headed down yesterday morning to the press event and – despite being a complete novice – he jumped headfirst into some (small) skates and gave it his all!

This spectacular neo-classical building is honestly one of my favourite locations in the heart of London.  And yesterday morning, with the clear blue sky and bright winter sun, it looked absolutely stunning.

let’s skate

He started in the Somerset Penguin Club (but only because I MADE him!) but soon begged me to join the better skaters on the main rink.  As with his skiing, he has no concept of fear nor accident.  Somehow we made it home in one piece – but not before some treats at Tom’s (Aiken) Skate Lounge café and bar, which over looks the ice.

I hear the evening skate sessions have a DJ.  I might have to return with the larger Him.

My family + other bright sparks

fireworks are a little controversial

fireworks are a little controversial

Fireworks are slightly controversial.  Firstly, they are a bit ‘Marmite’.  You either love the BANG and smell of gunpowder or it totally freaks you out.  Then, of course, there’s the concept that you are potentially just burning through wads of cash.  But all these issues aside, Guy Fawkes and his plot is a great story and, within reason, a few safe sparkles can’t really hurt anyone.

Last night, He took charge:  BANGS were bought, any keen family smalls were gathered and  – complete with some background tunes – we headed for a suburban patch of green and waited for dark.

Actually the Smalls loved it all so much, it felt worth every penny.

And, even some of the larger members of the family seemed to be having a SCARY amount of fun …

resisting Chinti + Parker

I’ve never been very good at resisting.  A good strong coffee, the last chocolate in the box, that perfect pair of winter boots, yet another hardback book  and… now I can add a LUX cashmere jumper to my want/need list.  Girls, without doing Uniqlo a disservice (as sometimes you do just need the same jumper in 4 different colours), I now realise that there is cashmere and then there is cashmere.

the chosen one from Chinti + Parker:  STARS £349

I first pulled a Chinti + Parker jumper over my head in the Primrose Hill boutique, Anna, when I was picking out clothes for the Grazia shoot.  And now Anna’s exclusive STAR is my favourite jumper on this planet.  Except the only problem is it isn’t quite mine. Yet.  You see, it’s still on Anna’s shop floor.  Infact, I want it to be mine so much that I’ve decided to interview Anna Singh, one of Chinti + Parker’s founders, simply as a way of getting a little closer to my chosen, chic (yet unpurchased) knitwear.

How would your friends describe you? Hardworking, creative and bossy.

Who or what inspires the Chinti + Parker designs? Anything and everything; we love a bit of ‘boy chic’, so we often look to menswear and, of course, the eternally chic French.

How ethical is ethical? Where and how our materials are produced is a core consideration and was our starting point as a brand. The aesthetic application came second, though it’s the balance of the two that’s crucial – if clothes aren’t desirable, then shining ethical credentials become moot.

Why fashion and not another form of art? Is fashion art? I’d counter that it’s an applied art, the vehicle for which is functional clothing, something that we embrace and respect.

boy chic and terribly french…

How do you escape? I love to go to Dorset for the weekend, I grew up there and it still feels like home.

Which is your favourite jumper? It changes…right now, I’m wearing a lot of our special AW13 collaboration Chinti + Parker Meets Patternity. I particularly love the black and white grid sweater.

When do you shop? At night on Net-a-Porter or Matches.

Who would you love to wear your clothes? I love Kate Moss, she is still the ultimate British style icon.

Why stars? Stars are a classic motif; they symbolize optimism (American flag), they’re pretty without being girly and there’s something about the way they look with denim.

How do you want your wearers to feel? Confident, warm (!) and relaxed – the Chinti woman is someone that loves style, but who wants to feel herself, and not to be hindered or inhibited by her clothing. Simplicity and ease are key.

Where to next? We would love boutiques in key cities across the world, and to be a globally recognised name.

Favourite date night restaurant? Pollen Street Social.

Tell us a secret. The Chinti Christmas Onesie is coming soon!!! (see above)

The Chinti + Parker sample sale is at Notting Hill’s 20th Century Theatre on 4/5 Dec from 9am.

Berners Tavern at The London Edition

The London Edition, Berners Street

The London Edition, Berners Street

To my untrained eye, Old Berners Street Hotel was always a bit of a non-event.  But according to Mr S (Ian Schrager), the building 100m from Oxford Street was a real catch.  He literally couldn’t wait to sink his teeth into it and – just two months ago – it was reopened as The London Edition, the New York hotelier’s second partnership with Marriott International.

The restaurant in this quite splendid and rather grown-up hotel is called Berners Tavern – and, for this aspect of the venture, Mr S has partnered with Mr A (Jason Atherton – of Pollen Street Social fame).  I booked a table for breakfast but earmarked the review as one I would do with someone who currently doesn’t live in London.  So, basically, I had to wait…

At last she arrived.  You might know her as West London Girl (as she writes the brilliant blog under this guise) but then if you’re a PR, you might know her as the founder of West London Living.  Either way, she’s Lucy Land and a REAL scream.  Anyway, we had a lot to catch up on (all those gaps social media leaves) and so we breakfasted in glorious style in the non-Tavern-like dinning room.

Now living in Amsterdam, the West London Girl is missing the London buzz.  She had reviewed (mostly in the West) til she dropped and Hot Danish (her man) had scooped her up and girl-napped her to the ‘Dam.  I’ve said it before on the blog but I owe this girl a lot – she got me into this fine blogging mess in the first place!

Breakfast was good (except for COLD toast which I hate but I’ll let pass on this occasion) and was served with an appropriate amount of ceremony.  I had a full English and she had porridge.   But, more importantly, it’s THE place to be seen, the venue of the moment.  It’s Mr S’s formula and we fall for it every time.  However, mixed with Mr A, we’re quite literally eating out of the palm of these hospitality wizards’ hands.

WLG and I properly caught up and filled up too.  So much so I forgot to ask her whether her porridge was any good…
