paper planning for 2014

All those who choose to diarise electronically had better look away now.  This post will mean little to you.   I fail to understand how you don’t consider flicking backwards and forwards through paper pages of arrangements and reminders a joy.  I – on the other hand – would rather miss my favourite band play than find myself punching appointments into some soulless electronic device.*

And so it is that time of year that my annual ritual begins: the choosing of next year’s paper bound diary.

Smythson diaries are the ultimate paper luxury

In years gone by, I was spoiled by my late very generous Grandmother.  For my birthday (in October) she would ask me what I would like as a gift.  and I (forever the planner) always requested a Smythson diary.  Initially I had no idea how expensive they were but as she aged (she lived until the ripe old age of 95!), the money was dispatched so that I could choose the colour and size to suit my needs.  The word luxury is summed up perfectly in a Smythson diary but I must admit that, now self-financing, I do find their prices hard to swallow.

Around this time last year I spotted a newish brand called PaperThinks in Oliver Bonas.  The bright coloured recycled leather, smooth ivory paper and that crucial right hand side page for notes of their weekly planners reminded me a great deal of my Smythson habit.  I impulse purchased and must admit that it has served me so perfectly I am keen to repeat for 2014.

In fact, so delighted was I by new diary experience, I was curious to find out more about Mr and Mrs Yu, the husband and wife team who co-founded PaperThinks. Eco-friendly, quality notebooks without sacrificing style, quality or design were their mission and, seeing as Aron Yu’s family owned a printing company in Hong Kong, they were perfectly poised to achieve this.  And soPaperThinks was born.

Have you bought your 2014 diary yet?  Or are you choosing digital over the magic of paper?

Paperthinks

PaperThinks diaries, notebooks and iPad covers (in glorious colours) are sold in Oliver Bonas shops as well as online for £15 but if you purchase before 1st Dec and sign up to their mailing list, you’ll receive £5 off.

* and yes I hear it’s VERY efficient but really…. it can’t be half as much fun…

Gymkhana: colonial India versus the local curry house

Recently I was bought a birthday dinner by one of my favourites at Curry Paradise, the family-run curry house which has been on South End Road, NW3 for donkey’s years.  However it was a special moment of discovery for both me and she-who-bought-me dinner.   We’d repeatedly heard how good the fare was and, bearing in mind we seem to find each others lives side-splittingly funny, couldn’t wait for our regular download.  We grazed til both the cows came home and our plates were squeaky clean.  So I’d agree with all who rave, it is one of the best local curry houses I’ve ever tasted – but doesn’t EVERYONE think that their local curry house is ‘the best’?

Even though it was a birthday present, I think I’m uncouth enough to admit that it was also ridiculously good value. But as a rule, Indian restaurants don’t tend to break the bank – unless of course you aim high, really high.

Gymkhana (Albemarle Street, W1) is right up there on the top shelf.   But then, on the other hand, this is so much more than its pitch: contemporary Indian cuisine.  It is dignified, refined and absolutely British Raj India in its ambiance, design and furnishing.

In fact, it has been on my absolutely-can’t-wait to review list since it first opened last summer and, seeing as I don’t know the difference between a nashta, sabzi and keema, I took along my very own Food-Bird for guidance.   She (with virtually no assistance from me) analysed and dissected the menu before ordered for us accordingly.

We began with the Duck Dosa and a minced Kid Goat which comes with soft bread buns to scoop up anything our spoon couldn’t reach.

Following this we dug deep into the Kasoori Chicken Tikka, lamb nalli barra (brilliantly seasoned with turmeric and ginger), some not very photogenic (but equally divine) bream, spiced okra, wild mushroom pilau, mint burrata, Indian onion and green chilli salad…. Oh my goodness, I quite lost count of the endless stream of dishes gracing our very laden dinner table.

Food-Bird and I were troopers; there was absolutely no slacking on our mission and, while tasting, we also talked through a couple of new (food) projects we are working on.  It’s so much fun to blend a sprinkling of work into a friendship.

Anyway, as you can only imagine if you haven’t yet been, Gymkhana was nothing short of an OUTSTANDING culinary delight! If I was forced to pick fault, I suppose the service may have been a little slow at times but this could be justified as all in keeping with an Anglo-Indian Sports Club.

Of course it was nothing like a curry house meal – in presentation, taste nor… cost.  And nor should it have been.  Horses for courses and dinners for diners.  But I must just say, one night in Gymkhana and you might never want to opt for the local again…  this, my dears, is the jewel in the crown.

If you eat as we did (which was probably enough for 4!) -it would cost around £150.

ps Gymkhana’s menu is very seasonal so if you’re a fan of game, now’s the time to go!

turning back the clock with some Americans

There is something a little obsessive about my personality, I have to admit.  But it’s probably most evident in my work-life balance.  Stats, trends and anything to do with online engagement simply send me to heaven and back.  And watching them in real time is just plain addictive.  So if you think you are reading my blog anonymously and that I honestly don’t know your sex, tablet size or blog-post read speed is, you’re very wrong.  I know it all.  And as my readership is growing and growing (honestly at a rate of knots – I can’t thank you ALL enough*), I’m totally fascinated by each and every one of you.

My latest (delightful) revelation is that I have an influx of Americans.  So, please all say ‘hey!’ to my Yank readers.  Most are based in the US (who can blame them) but a number of them live here in London and I like to think I’m shedding a little light on this fabulous city they are currently residing in.  In fact, I spent last Friday with two of these fabulous girls (doing what the Americans do best) spoiling ourselves.  More accurately, we were baby-showering our dear friend in the most indulgent way possible.  No neutral coloured babygrows nor dummy exchanging for us.  Instead, we met at Agua on the first floor of the Sanderson hotel and – to ensure that our Special Pregnant was perfectly pampered – we joined her in the white calm… and pampered too.

I chose the Natura Bissé Age-Defying Facial, which only launched (exclusively) at Agua two weeks ago.  I had read that it uses active ingredients to repair any skin which is… clearly aging.  Key amino acids and a fist full of A, E and Vitamin C work hard to turn back the clock on any wrinkles lying in their wake.

My therapist Matt was a winner.  He’s been at Agua for 8 years and what he didn’t know about reactivating healthy cells didn’t feel worth knowing.  The 80 minutes past by in a flash and – although it DID feel a little curious and stingy – the glycolic acid bit was the most exciting.  I emerged with a glowing, firmer face and padded down the stairs in my toweling robe extremely relaxed.
