Instax Mini 90 and a passion for instant photography

Until last week my photos were – for the most part – intangible.  Living in a box (called Instagram), embedded in my blog and rarely printed.  While this is wonderfully cost effective it is, at the same time, horribly sad.   Despite being an avid post pic manipulator, there is a lot to be said for analogue creativity…  so I jumped when my local Snappy Snaps (in Swiss Cottage) offered to loan me Fujifilm’s Instax Mini 90 for review.

with baited breath, you watch the image imerge

Armed with a handful of films (yes, remember those?), a smart retro-designed camera in black and silver, a press button flash and a charger (which I never needed)… I skipped off back into the olden days.

There’s something so immediately thrilling about Polaroid-style photography.  And we (the Smalls and I) romanced each time it whizzed out a new shot.  Then, I pinned each (worthy) one to my board and gave it a little caption (Instagram has taught me how much I love to add words to my images).

I recently read Suzanna Conway’s book This I Know where she wrote: ‘In all honesty instant photography is an addiction and once you’ve started you’ll find yourself dreaming in little squares and spending your rent money on film…’

And I see her point.  It’s not cheap. (£17.99 for 2 x 10 shots)

But, once you’ve bounced back from the harsh reality of living with unadulterated pictures, it’s a WHOLE different world of snapping.

Now, image quality isn’t what we’re  used to but let’s be realistic – this is an Instax camera.  All the same, it allows you to be creative and, if you wanted to go one step further, with the right scanner, you could get lots and lots of resolution out of these photos.

Besides, it’s completely intuitive to use and will delight all those around you.

Pop into my local Snappy Snaps to purchase your Instax Mini 90 £139.99 (comes with 20 photographs) and let them know I sent you.

nature’s botox queen visits London

You might have noticed it’s been a little sunnier in London over the last 5 days?  Yes?  Well, I can explain…

A little bit of sunshine dropped by for the weekend.  In the name of Indie Lee.

Indie Lee and Liz McCarthy outside Soho House after a VERY long lunch…

You might remember I interviewed this mistress of natural, organic beauty when I was in Manhattan last October.  Well, Indie (finally) decided to sprinkle some of her beauty magic on our city and so my friends at A Beautiful World (her exclusive stockiest in the UK) threw a brilliantly girlie Saturday lunch to celebrate her presence.

The lunch took place at Soho House, initiating Indie into Blighty with a platter of fish, chips and mushy peas.  And, while we all relished a long lazy lunch, much attention was, of course, given to all things beauty…

Around the table we had: Laura Ward-Ongley from Fab Tips, Zoe Lloyd from MissLittleForty, Liz McCarthy (who quite frankly makes this A Beautiful World), Julia Rebaudo from StyloNylon, Indie and me.

I asked Indie what she loves most about our city:

history – the city is so rich in history no matter where I turned there was something of historic significance.

press and blogger community – I have been a bit emotional about how receptive the beauty industry has been to both my brand and me.

weather I left a foot of snow and freezing temperatures.  I haven’t worn a coat the entire time I’ve been here.  Everyone talks about the London weather and rain.  Not really sure what the fuss is about.  It’s been lovely and warm.

fish & chips…. now understand why I had to try them.

Since then I’ve been trialing the 2 latest products in Indie’s collection:  Squalane Facial Cream (£44) and her Indie Lee Rosehip Cleanser (£21).

Squalane Facial Cream (£44), Indie Lee Rosehip Cleanser (£21) and Squalane Face Oil

Squalane Facial Cream (£44), Indie Lee Rosehip Cleanser (£21) & Squalane Facial Oil (£22)

The cream follows on from her Squalane oil which I’ve already raved about on Life of Y.  Extracted from sustainable farmed olive plants,  the squalane actively improves your skins cellular function. It’s absorbed into the skin and really will  MAKE YOU LOOK YOUNG AGAIN!

The cleanser is gentle as can be, yet luxuriously indulgent.  It leaves your natural oils put while stripping away the grime.

And so – yet again – I am blown away by just how clear and fresh my skin looks when I bother to use Indie’s products.  That’s it… I’m bothering full time from now on…

Both of these products will go on sale on Saturday 1st March on A Beautiful World.

Strip Bar & Steak, Malmaison Hotel

He was away last week on a business trip.  So I decided to head out one night to Strip Bar.

Now I have your attention.

But relax (Mum), Strip Bar and Steak is the recently opened steakhouse in the Malmaison Hotel on Charterhouse Square, Farringdon.

I’m not sure if the interior is NYC-styled or hinting Vegas, but either way the lighting is low, furniture dark and the brick walls are pretty bare bar some neon signage.

My dinner guest was long overdue a Life of Yablon treat.  We’ve worked together in various guises over the years and only ever had a giggle.  But more than that, she’s super switched on in business therefore a perfectly brilliant person to throw new ideas at.  So, that’s what we did – while sipping cocktails and chewing our meat.

Meat IS the business at Strip.  So, after our starters of tuna tartare and beef carpaccio, we got stuck right into our New York Strip Steak – with sides of truffle mash and wilted spinach.

The service was spot on; attentive and friendly without excessive loitering.  A couple of hours passed in a flash before we realised it was week-night-bedtime.  After all, you wouldn’t want to be in a strip club when the lights go on.

personalised leather camera strap

I’m trying not to be a camera obsessive.  But the plan isn’t going too well.   Jessops is my new go-to boutique and I’m spending hours online trawling through photo workshops, galleries,  lens reviews and…  checking out accessories.  Because ALL hobbies need some proper time-consuming accessorising.

So you can only imagine how delighted I was to receive this  leather camera strap, personalised by those life-less-ordinary people who pride themselves on being Not On The High Street.

The soft leather strap is thick and the right shade of tan (no tangoed leather for me).

Mine has been embossed with LIFE OF YABLON but you might find you want to choose your own name/business….

ps  One of the Smalls has since decided to use their silver sharpie to enhance the lettering which (although I was a little taken aback at first) I really quite like.
