Film review: Yves Saint Laurent

Yves Saint Laurent, the film

Yves Saint Laurent, the film

Not in the least bit put off by a smattering of less than flattering film reviews, I couldn’t wait to see Yves Saint Laurent (played by Pierre Niney) last night.  Because, as is the way with too many of those genius types, Yves was a man with many demons and I had heard that this recently released biopic bares all.

Tournage YSL

And so while a crucial period of his life (Paris 1957 – 1986) unravels like an out-of-control fiesta, I found myself drooling at his sketches, the bourgeoisie fashion world and a life of excess belonging to the man behind one of fashion’s greatest monograms.

the real genius

But – please don’t get the wrong impression about the designer’s talent nor his public image.  He was pure geek, treated models terribly, heavily indulged in party drugs and was neurotic in the extreme –  the biggest wonder is how he single-handedly revolutionised the way women dress.  Which, of course, he did against the backdrop of Sixties’ liberation.

This is a film for those who love fashion.  Otherwise, the crippling self-doubt and sluggish story might just get on your nerves.

are you a compulsive hobbyist?

My brother and I are both self-confessed Compulsive Hobbyists.   Him probably even more than me.  We find some new activity – however random – and obsess until we have read every book/article/google-search.  It’s fun, time-consuming and drives both our partners MAD.

For those of you who read my blog, you’ll have picked up that, of late, I am a little bit in love with photography. My latest obsession.

Aperture, lens speeds, lighting, ISO, exposure… and a little cake eating to aid concentration.

Aperture, lens speeds, lighting, ISO, exposure… and a little cake eating to aid concentration.

Walking down the street I see possible images through imaginary lens.  At night, I dream of scenarios I want to set up and shoot.  And in every free moment, I spend hours online admiring the work of real photographers… before obsessing further as how the image has been manipulated.

I think you’re getting the idea.

A keen supporter of all local shops and cafés, I’ve lately befriended my local Snappy Snaps.  I need them – not only for printing but for priceless, impartial camera advice.

So, a couple of weeks ago I persuaded the team there to allow 2 friends plus me into their secret studio downstairs.  And – while Building Feasts blogger brought provisions – the three of us got to know our cameras a little better.

With thanks to Snappy Snaps, Swiss Cottage.

Reminiscing and scribbling, describing and impersonating all week long, those ridiculously girlie skirts made out of pure netting… and so you can only begin to imagine the squeals of delight when she was sent an all-sing-and-dancing tutu pettskirt in a pale lilac colour from the adorable people at Angel’s Face.

Her uniform was pulled off and – within seconds – she had the delicious pettiskirt on with their stunning angel wings t-shirt which was also included in her special package.

mini ballerinas backstage at The Royal Ballet

A few months ago, we struck a deal with three ballerinas.  If they worked hard for their Grade 2 ballet exam,  we would treat them to a trip to the ballet.  We purposely didn’t specify which ballet or where.

And then we pushed that BIG boat out and splashed out on tickets to see The Sleeping Beauty at the Royal Opera House.

Last Saturday finally came round and I honestly don’t know who was more excited … the mini ballerinas or their mums?

Up to my usual tricks, I called the press office months in advance to see if the blog could pull in a special favour.  ‘A ballerina’ I begged.  ‘A costume’ I negotiated.  ‘Just a ballet shoe’ I pleaded.  But unfortunately only a programme was offered.  So I tried another route.

It just so happens that I know someone who works at the Royal Opera House.  I asked him for some advice (rather than the hard core begging).  He simply told me to call his mobile when we arrived.  No promises, he kept reminding me.

And it’s when you have zero expectations that magic things happen.

He whisked us into a world of the Royal Opera House that I never dared to imagine existed.

Sets were being created, as were hair and make-up and rails of costumes and ballet shoes were being sorted through for this production and others.

We peered through the glass into private rooms where REAL ballet dancers were practicing.

Within 30 minutes we had seen it ALL while bumping into various members of the cast in the lift.

We even saw The Sleeping Beauty’s Prince Florimund as he practiced his turns in front of his teacher.

Again, I don’t know who was more thrilled…

Slipping into our seats just before the curtain rose, I pinched myself… just to check that I wasn’t dreaming.
