easy dining

dinner for 8

Dinner parties have long been the middle-class tension release required for the 30-50s crowd.  In a home (rather than a noisy restaurant), those seeking an alcohol-induced conversational table away from their daily corporate grind can really GO FOR IT and – depending on the guests to hand – things can get really quite lively.

The guests weren’t my problem.  The 8 of us dine together regularly (to date – never a sober night) and no-one ever needs a second invitation to let their hair down.

No, the problem was that it was OUR turn.  The dinner party location rotates and we were back to Him and me. Mass catering isn’t my ball game.  I mean, it just really stresses me out and – with a seriously busy week stretching ahead – I bounded round to Building Feasts‘ kitchen for some advice.

‘A big chicken pie’ she suggested – already starting to dictate the ‘easy’ recipe.  I wasn’t convinced it was that easy.

‘MY fish pie!’ she offered, even volunteering to make it for me!

And we drank lots of tea trying to work out what could possibly work best for the easiest dinner ever.  I mean, what can honestly be worse than a jack-in-a-box hostess?  Well, BEING that hostess, I reckon…

After all, I wanted to party too.

Then I remembered that there had been one (only one) moment in Building Feasts‘ life where she had been physically unable to build a feast.  So she had enlisted the help of the brilliant couple behind Honey & Co.

I speed dialed.   Three salads and one cake later, I felt perfectly adequate to roast some rosemary, garlic and lemon infused chicken, assemble a bowl of berries and throw together a mezze of starters.

Job done.  I promptly instructed all guests to bring a bottle of something they might shot. (new verb:  to shot)

After dinner?  Wii Trivial Pursuit of course – Girls V Boys style.  Sigh.

Today?  Sore heads all round.

Review: Blue Aura v30 Blackline

Without sounding smug, I’m having a really good day.  The rain is giving me the perfect excuse to stay at home and get this pile of work, invoicing and general paper-stuff done.  And I’m rockin’ some tunes here at Life of Yablon HQ as I go.  (Now I sound idiotic as well as smug.)

the very talented Emilie

the very talented Emilie Nicolas

In fact, some tunes might be a lie anyway.  I’m playing ONE tune on a loop.  Looking for something a bit new and different, I headed to Record of the Day.  (You might remember one of my best mates and her him are the power-house behind this brilliant music business/site.)  And bingo – look what I’ve found.. Emilie Nicolas –  a relatively recently discovered, totally talented 26 year-old fresh from the Nordic music scene. (listen here)

But maybe I wouldn’t be quite so smug if I was listening to Emilie through my MacBook Pro?  Nope.  She wouldn’t sound so mystical, melancholic and yet evocative…

We all know only too well that sound quality suffers when digital music is compressed.  So, today (and hopefully tomorrow) I’m reviewing the V30 Blackline by Blue Aura in a bid to try and ‘retro’ (ie improve) the music sound at my desk.

the completely stunning V30 Blue Aura

the completely stunning V30 Blue Aura

For those who know more about sound than me (hardly difficult), this sexy piece of kit is a two-channel system that uses valve technology instead of transistors to replace the warmth lost through the conversion process, hopefully bringing it closer to its original quality.

Got that?

IMG_4620

In short:  those glowing glass cylinders are making me sway rather than wince at a terribly tinny tune.

Blue Aura recently launched this latest version of the V30 and although most of their speakers are wirelessly bluetooth, these are not.  I don’t mind though as the wires are pretty much out of sight.

IMG_4618

In our iPhone-dominated world I asked them why there was no docking station.  Turns out the aesthetics are so important to the design team there, they had point blank refused.  I love that.  No one needs yet another dock gathering dust.  (anyway, you can easily plug in your iphone, ipad etc)

IMG_4616

He set it up last night (I promised to credit) and I could tell that He was pretty impressed with the sound quality.  An avid reader of T3, He knows his valves from his outputs, you see.

So excuse me while I listen to this Norwegian vocalist one more time before the school run, smugly swaying as I go…

COMPETITION:  This v30 system (worth £299) – ideal for the office, home study, bedroom etc  –  would make any music lover smile.  Blue Aura has VERY generously given me one to give to a lucky (soon-to-be-smug) reader.  All you have to do is sign up to their newsletter here and the winner will be chosen at random on 2nd June 2014.

What I wore last night

I swore I would never write what I wore last night.  Not because I am completely intimidated by the fashion bloggers who do it so well.  Not because I fear to enter the fashion world.  But because I never wear anything interesting enough to fill a blog post – let alone organise a selfie.

HOWEVER, last night I wore a jumpsuit.  Therefore momentarily jumping into that fashion box.

I tried to paint how I might look…

I’m so glad that jumpsuits are here to stay’ commented one of my besties.  ‘I mean, they’re not a trend but a staple’, she added with all the conviction I needed.

Anyway, the invitation dress code implied glam and I needed inspiration for something a bit different.

Mason by Michelle Mason was brand new to me.  Michelle was born in Korea (she’s exactly the same age as me) and studied fine arts at California State University.  More recently she was a fashion model here in London before returning to LA as a shoe designer.  Women’s ready-to-wear came next and Mason was launched in 2002.

Mason is all about the tailored fit but this silky jumpsuit has perhaps been an unexpected winner for the brand. It carries the sharpness and forward aesthetic of a modern woman, while the delicate French lace makes it properly feminine and curiously sexy.

Ok. I’m done.  And I promise never to pose as a fashionista again.

Ginny Ks in the Schreiber House

I can’t remember if the lure of the house or the silk  strappy top came first.  Either way, I was more than mildly interested in both.  The 4-storey house (in Hampstead, NW3) has always caught my eye.  Designed for the leading British furniture manufactuer Chaim Schreiber  by James Gowan in the 1960s, the building is iconic to say the least.

Anyway Ginny and I were introduced by a Mum At The School Gates.  Her label, Ginny Ks, had recently launched and I was asked to offer a little social media helping hand?  Requests like this are not as unusual as her home but I was intrigued enough by this line of casual-chic clothes to offer some steering.

And then the 2 came together, when Ginny decided to shoot her latest collection in her home.

Camera-poised, I dropped by to interview her:

what did you do before launching Ginny Ks? I worked as a designer but in ladies’ footwear.

2013-07-25 14.42.09-1who is wearing your latest collection? Women who like a relaxed, yet feminine chic, aged 20+

and where? Informally at home or on holiday

why did you design the line?  I was frustrated by the lack of informal clothing that was flattering, feminine, not tight and yet sexy. I felt there was a need for a fresh take on casual, lounge clothing.

Ginny Ks 2014

where do you shop? Loft (love this shop!), Aime in Ledbury Road, Zadig and Voltaire, Lanvin for shoes and Modern Love for occasion dresses.

favourite designer? Isabel Marant

what inspires you? Yves Saint Laurent 1970s style,  Bastille fashion, Ines de la Fressange,

P1030498

Schreiber had special built-in furniture made for his home

who would you LOVE to wear Ginny Ks?  Olivia Palermo, Kate Moss, Sophie Marceau, Vanessa Paradis, Sienna Miller

how has living in such an iconic house influenced you? Living in a brilliantly designed space, which fulfils both the aesthetic as well as function, has inspired me to ensure these are key elements of the collection.  My aim is to create clothing that makes a woman feel beautiful, as well as comfortable, unrestricted and relaxed.

P1030493

do passersby knock on your door asking to look inside?  Not so far.  However we are frequently approached by architects, writers, photographers etc wanting to have a look around.  English Heritage is coming over next week to take pictures for a new publication on influential post-war architecture.

… with that strapped top I had been admiring.

how long ago did you move in?  did you have your eye on it for a while?  We moved in almost 12 years ago unfamiliar with this part of Hampstead – the house was not officially on the market. The agent, who had been showing us properties for months, finally understood what we were looking and produced an old sales brochure of the house.  We viewed the house just before it was on the market.

where to from here for Ginny Ks?  Ideally I would like to expand the range to include clothing for all informal occasions, whilst still maintaining the relaxed, chic, feminine vibe.  I would like to sell primarily online, involving my customers in the direction of the collection and selection of new styles.

COMPETITION:  Ginny has very generously given me a £100 voucher for one of my readers to win.  All you have to do is LIKE both Life of Yablon and Ginny Ks Facebook pages and one winner will be chosen on 14th May 2014.  Voucher can be redeemed online or at the sale.

For more information about the Spring Sale (where you can try on/purchase Ginny Ks) on 21/22nd May at The Schreiber House, 9 West Heath Road, NW3 email: Ginny@GinnyKs.co.uk
