bedside lighting in collaboration with BHS

Reading in bed is one of life’s pure joys.  And seeing your Smalls read their well-thumbed Percy Jackson or Harry Potters while tucked up, post bubble-bath, is equally joyous.  So, I’m always on the look out for a bedside lamp to complement that downtime moment.

Anglepoise lamp

the Anglepoise lamp was originally designed by Sir Kenneth Grange

Last week, while visiting a friend, I noticed she had a lamp to match the décor of every room in her home.  (Her home is immaculately decorated so I’m often stealing ideas when I drop by!).

An interior designer by profession, she explained her love of the British classic Anglepoise lights.  For over 70 years, these lamps have been a firm favourite in the UK and their table lamps remain true to the original design, whilst simultaneously incorporating modern updates.

A little googling to check costs and I found this Type75TM Mini lighting for £85.  Perfect size for the Smalls’ bedside tables but with heavy base to avoid tipping.  I particularly like the satin matt paint finish…

my beautiful BIKINI laundrette

I waited until the end of my meeting with my current blog sponsor to drop the launderette into conversation.  Even then, it was a hard one to pitch.  A couple of weeks earlier, I’d walked past a retro, cult-looking launderette on England’s Lane NW3 … and I was just DYING to shoot the new swimwear/resortwear label, Biondi there.  Totally out of context for a luxury brand but spot on for the brand’s social media presence.

luxury, designer bikinis in a laundrette?

the very talented models –  Ruth Galliers in Biondi cross-over halter £95 (top)  bottoms (£79) and Fi Sheep in Biondi halter swimsuit £195

And then I almost fell of my chair as Claudine Davies, founder of Biondi Couture (the boutique in Chelsea and here online), the entrepreneur behind the wholesale business, View Studio and now swimwear designer of the new in-house collection, Biondi, wholeheartedly agreed with my quite ludicrous idea.

Claudine Davies, the swimwear guru!

She’s actually an old friend and I sensed her big-fat yes-was simply to amuse me, the over-excited kid asking for a treat.  Either way, I ran with it.  FAST.  Before she could change her mind!

Oh and what a treat the whole project has been.  The first call went out to my friend and seriously talented photographer Clare Walsh.

If anyone would ‘get’ what I was trying to create, it would be her.  Not only did she grasp my gist, she had a million ideas at to how we could achieve it.

Between us we recruited our launderette dream team.  From Paul on hair, Alex on make-up to our stunning models, Ruth and Fiona with Adam (Claudine’s brother) filming – and of course the Biondi Couture team of Aliya (designer), Sophie (marketing) and boss Claudine who pulled out and styled some stunning outfits from what is the first ever Biondi collection.

As this is  a fully functioning launderette, we had to work outside of washing hours and it was late into the evening before we packed up more bikinis, swimsuits, wedges, silk dresses/trousers, sunhats, sunglasses, beach bags and visors than you could shake a stick at.

Exhausted but slightly wired, we all agreed these luxurious designer holiday togs had been extracted from their natural, glamorous habitat but (and I hope you agree) the final shots (which will appear very soon on Biondi Couture’s Facebook, Twitter and Instagram feeds) maintain the collection’s elegance, style and perfect fit.

Big thanks to all involved but a special mention to the lovely woman who runs the launderette for being so generous with her iconic location and to Black Truffle deli (3 doors up), our hair and make-up station long after closing time.

Clare’s photography from the shoot is SPOT on and exactly what we were looking to achieve.  Keep a keen eye on Biondi’s Facebook, Twitter and Instagram feeds to see her pics first!

COMPETITION:  To celebrate Biondi’s now-infamous launderette photo shoot, Biondi Couture has given Life of Yablon a stunning bikini or swimsuit (worth up to £245) for one VERY lucky reader.  To enter, all you have to do is to tell us what you think of the photos as and when they pop up on Biondi’s social feeds. LIKE and SHARE on Facebook, RT on Twitter and LIKE on Instagram to show your LOVE for this stunning Summer 2014 wardrobe!  One of you will be chosen at random on Saturday 31st May and notified via Facebook.  Good Luck!

restaurant review: Circus & a little #mirrorblogging

Circus restaurant, LondonWhere do ideas come from?  I mean, what makes you think of certain things at random times?  Either way, the idea for this blog post came to me when I was cleaning the windows (true fact).   I started to think about #mirrorblogging.   What on earth is that?  I hear you cry.  Well (I’m so glad you asked) it’s my brand new concept in restaurant blogging.  The idea is to review a night out (but could easily be a sneaky lunch) with a fellow blogger, followed by each of us churning out a post and some visuals.

Circus, Covent Garden

Circus, Covent Garden

Some immediate benefits sprung to mind:

1)     less excusing myself as I reach for my camera for the 48th time

2)     the restaurant receives 2 reviews for the same meal

3)     readers of either blog could jump between the two posts, therefore getting a 2-way perspective

4)     a good excuse to hang out with a lovely blogger-friend

Circus restaurant, LondonOh and there was one more reason.  On this inaugural jaunt, we could take our Hims too.  Therefore allow/encouraging my Him to moan away to his delight being a blog-widower with someone who actually knew exactly how he felt.

Enter Stylonylon.  Actually a brilliantly talented novelist, photographer, stylist, writer – and perfect dinner guest.

Location-wise, the first #mirrorblogging restaurant needed to be of a certain calibre.  A photography challenge and something a little less ordinary.

Enter Circus which is undoubtedly extraordinary in its proposition and execution.  For those who haven’t yet been, this eatery provides short, sharp bursts of unusual entertainment and curiously talented acts while you eat, drink and enjoy some pretty cranked up music – but in a non obtrusive way.  Quite a challenge, you might think.

Circus restaurant, LondonMost of the cabaret artists at Circus develop their acts specifically for the restaurant and, as the evening unfolds, there is a mix of shows so that the appeal-factor is as universal as possible. I’d say we gasped and laughed in equal measure.

The crowd was mostly a corporate one with a smattering of first daters (I reckon) and those looking for something risqué but non-provocative.  I’m rather prudish and nothing made me blush.

Our Hims hit it off (phew), drank more than their share of red wine and Stylonylon and I had free rein to catch up, snap, gossip and snap a little more.

Circus restaurant, LondonOur pan-Asian dinner was impressive too.   I started with some beef and foie gras gyoza (£8) followed by a plate of yellow tail sashimi (£15) and a side of sweet soy aubergine (£4.50) – which is quite frankly too good to be sidelined as a vegetable side.

Desert was dramatic.  And calorific.  (Look away now if you need to squeeze into a tight dress anytime soon.)  Mini doughnuts, mini white chocolate magnums, apple compote and jasmine ice cream.  I mean… (£7.50).

So a little homework for you all: check out Stylonylon’s post, tell me what’s your latest crazy idea was and DO get in touch if you’re a blogger and fancy a little #mirrorblogging…  just don’t try any of these circus acts at home.Circus restaurant, London

Circus (27-29 Endell St, Covent Garden) operate a strictly over 21s policy and does not accept any hen or stag parties, or any large single sex groups of over 6 guests. For weekend nights it is recommend that guests book 6 weeks in advance.

cake/life choices

One of my favourite local deli/coffee shops is called Black Truffle on England’s Lane.

I love the way the owner, Ben O’Toole, lines the walls with food, the way the light floods into the cafe, its high ceilings, artisan Climpson coffee and… well, the pastries, brownies and tempting treats which are mostly made in the kitchen downstairs.

Georgia Green pretty much runs the deli’s kitchen. And the more I chatted to her, the more curious I became of this clearly super-bright 22 year old.  So I tricked her into making His birthday cake this weekend and then quizzed her as to how she became part of the Black Truffle gang.

Which was when I learnt that her story is one of choice, creativity, ambition and fulfillment.  Only a decade older than our Mini, I had a sudden moment of realisation that our children’s lives (symbolically the cake at large) are simply the sum of those ingredients we allow the Smalls to pick…

Here is Georgia’s story (in her own words) and a few pictures of His birthday cake (which was ridiculously delicious) as well as the kitchen, deli and her produce at Black Truffle.

Georgia of Georgia’s Cakes

From architecture to fashion design to textiles to animation, the career choices I explored since graduating from secondary school never seemed to satisfy me. Only recently did I discover that cooking, particularly patisserie, was where my underlying passion lied. I had to take the bold move (and lots of persuading my parents) to leave London College of Communication where I was studying animation, to redirect my career into the culinary world and apply to Le Cordon Bleu, London. From the day I stepped into the pristine white building in Bloomsbury Square (September ’12), I knew I had finally found where I belonged and have never looked back…

The two subjects I excelled in most were maths and art (hence the architecture…) and when it came to cooking, I was drawn towards patisserie rather than savoury food mainly because of the similarity to maths; exact measurements, precision, logic and the correct method will produce correct results. In regards to art, well, that’s self explanatory…every patisserie product is an art in itself – visually stunning and the more attractive, the more appetising it looks!

His DJ b-day cake made by Georgia – it fed more than 20 family members with lots left….

I currently work at Black Truffle Deli in Belsize Park where I can let my creativity run wild while cooking savoury dishes as well as sweet ones. The kitchen is like my little science lab where I can experiment as much as I want and learn something new every day. As well as this, I have my own private orders specifically for cakes and patisserie goods under my own name Georgia’s. The most important factor in my cooking (especially cakes) is that they taste just as good as they look. What irritates me the most is when you are given a beautifully decorated cake and it tastes like cardboard. It is my aim to prove otherwise!

When I’m not in the kitchen, I dance most of the time. I am involved in an Israeli performing dance group, training myself in Ballet (and pointe shoes!) and helping my partner develop his events entertainment company Ilaidance where we offer all sorts of productions and dance shows for events.

In 2 years? 5 years? 10 years time? Who knows what will happen in the future, however I would like to think that I will be doing what I am now, but on a larger scale. Perhaps my own catering company? My ultimate dream is to be a television chef – the new Nigella perhaps? I would love to show others how to create amazing looking food which still has the ‘home-made’ touch.

To order one of Georgia’s patisseries or cakes, do email her info@georgias-cakes.co.uk  Or simply pop into Black Truffle for a proper cup of coffee and a slice of her quiche.
