Scarlett Willow tablewear

Last month – at the Sheer Luxe e-commerce conference – I sat on a table with some pretty inspirational business women.   The landscape is changing all the time in this increasingly competitive market and I’m constantly surprised  how marketing bods share so well. Ideas and findings which – with my geek hat on -utterly fascinate me… in an almost unhealthy way. Anyway, over the next few weeks, I will be featuring those who impressed me most at the conference – hopefully introducing you to some brand new e-tail therapy!

I’d never heard of Scarlett Willow but it only took a quick Google to be sold on the majority of the site’s extensive range of tablewear – much of which  are designed in-house and can be personalised.

Here is my interview with the founder, Clare Gradidge, together with some images of the stunning goodies she sent over for review.

What motivated you to start Scarlett Willow? I wanted to do something creative. I had worked in the production department at Conde Nast for 7 years by then and was excited to build my own brand.

How many is your kitchen table usually set for? My life is quite ‘fluid’ so it varies hugely from dinner for two to big Sunday lunches for 10. And the odd telly supper too, I’m afraid!

What do you love to cook?  It has to be roast chicken mainly because I also love to eat it!

Where do you source your products?  We try and support British manufacturing as much as possible and since many of our products are personalised, we find that we do actually produce most things in the UK.

I hear your products are a bit of a hit with the odd celeb? Many celebrities have eaten off our placemats as we supplied BAFTA with their placemats for their awards ceremony several times – James McAvoy was famously caught swiping an armful of them to take home with him. I also happen to know that a certain little Prince is in possession of one of our children’s mats.

What makes Scarlett Willow so different from other tableware retailers? Many of our designs are exclusive to the Scarlett Willow brand as much is designed in-house. We also offer a personalised service on many of our products so with our design expertise and our customer’s imagination, they are sure to come away with something completely unique.

Is there anything you’d recommend for Father’s Day? A personalised glass pint tankard would make a perfect present for most Dads I know.

Where do you love to shop online? I have a weakness for net-a-porter – there is something hugely convenient about having everything under one ‘roof’.

And offline? Duke of York’s Square in Chelsea covers most bases for me – fashion, food, cafes, culture. Especially on a Saturday with the truly outstanding farmers’ market.

Where do you love to eat dinner – out? I love Sam’s Brasserie in Chiswick, my local The Latchmere which has just reopened under new management or Eight Over Eight in Chelsea.

If you could invite anyone for dinner tonight, who would it be? Can I just say Ryan Gosling? Don’t judge me.

Tell us an entertaining secret. I’m all about being able to actually sit with my guests rather than spend my life in the kitchen so I always have my ear to the ground for ways of getting around this. My best pudding ‘cheat’ is to buy a bag of frozen fruit from any old supermarket and cover it (still frozen) with melted white chocolate (Green & Blacks is the best) in individual bowls. Super quick and easy and super delicious.

Next time you’re entertaining, dip into Scarlett Willow for some table dressing inspiration.

Josh Rosebrook. LA’s (greenest) hair/skin guru.

Josh Rosebrook might well be an eco-friendly skin and hair care specialist.  He might be quite the celebrity hairdresser LA has been searching for.  But he also happens to be one of the nicest hair gurus I have ever met.

Funny, passionate, driven, clever and brilliantly on this natural hair trend… I almost got a parking ticket while my interview at 202 ran on and on.

His story begins when he was aged 10.  Discovering an antique barber’s chair in their family home basement, Josh set up shop and was soon colouring, cutting and styling any heads he could get his hands on.

Instinctively he gets hair.  I can see him sizing up my barnet as we chat.  ‘It’s all about the scalp,’ he explains to me ‘and I’m literally obsessed with the contents of beauty products.’

Researching ingredients versus the effect of natural products on skin and hair, Josh was experimenting with his own homemade skincare in his early 20s.    Not long after Josh Rosebrook Skin and Haircare was born.

I had SO much fun trying all his products!

All his ingredients are natural, organic and of the highest quality.

I left with (thankfully no parking ticket) a bag of beauty booty.  My favourite product are Josh’s deep nourishing shampoo and conditioner (don’t expect the same lather as those awful synthetic ones – embrace the different bubbles) and his utterly pure yet superior hold Hair Spray.

Alicia Silverstone, Tori Spelling, Rob Lowe and Life of Yablon are all fans.  You might want to think about binning your evil paraben and sulfate packed haircare and jumping into my green beauty garden?

You might have guessed?  A Beautiful World stocks Josh Rosebrook’s products exclusively in the UK from 1st June.  AND special launch offer… you can use the code JOSH10 at checkout for 10% off!

film review: Downhill

In a post last week I briefly mentioned that I had seen a preview screening of a new British comedy called Downhill.  This is, in a nutshell, the story of 4 old school friends (albeit some 30 years previously) who challenge themselves to walk 192 miles coast-to-coast.  Why?  One word:  mid-life-crises.

film Downhill

Gordon (Richard Lumsden –The Catherine Tate Show) is determined to lead the group of Keith (Karl Theobald – Alan Partridge), Steve (Jeremy Swift – Downton Abbey) and Julian (Ned Dennehy – Tyrannosaur) as they travel on foot from St Bees in Cumbria to Robin Hood’s Bay in North Yorkshire.

The journey is a comedy of errors and makes for curiously good viewing.  At times during the film I felt an urge to give old school friends a call to get us all walking/drinking too.  What could be more fun than walking by day and drinking by night.  But –  in a rather soberingly way, these grown-up men reveal their lifetime lows and even find that they have less in common than perhaps they did at school.

film Downhill

Clearly a profoundly mismatched group way back then, the challenging walk plus those extra years turns out to be pretty tough – mentally and physically.

Directed by acclaimed TV commercial director James Rouse (this is his feature debut), Downhill is well-worth a watch.  Not the greatest film you’ll have ever seen but one which will remind you not to take on more than you can chew with those you might have allowed yourself to lose touch with.

In cinemas on May 30th 2014 and available on Blu-ray, DVD and digital platforms on June 2nd.

hair toggle news

Have I taken leave of my senses as I sit down to write about hair toggles?  NO.  This is serious business.  I have spent years and years in search of something even vaguely effective to keep my hair in a top knot.  And nothing has faced up to challenge as well as these recently-discovered spiral hair toggles.

Before I tell you just how brilliant they are… let’s discuss how wrong hair toggles/elastics can be.

No grip on super shiny hair – tugging out precious hair – cutting off blood supply on wrist – a grip too tight headache resulting – as dull as hair elastic – VELVET scrunchies…

Do you remember just how bad those velvet hair scrunchies were?  Lady Y even started making them for me… I loved them so much.

OK so the Sweaty Betty spiral hair toggles look like a phone cord but don’t be put off.  Firstly, they are strong yet stretchy.  Secondly, they grip effectively but don’t tear the hair when you pull them out.  And the best thing ever is that they don’t leave your hair with all those odd kinks upon exit.

The spiral hair toggles are £4 for a pack of 5 and they come in five colours (black, blue and clear, bright pink and neon yellow) from Sweaty Betty.  Clearly I need to get out more.
