Library Private Members ONLY

Library Private Members ClubLondon loves its private members clubs.  This is clearly where big fat deals are sealed, careers ignited and a certain amount of flirting with the enemy goes on.

Library Private Members ClubBasically, it’s all about the closed doors.

Library Private Members ClubLibrary is the latest to (semi) open its doors.  Designed for the city’s literary, design and artist communities, the club is located in the heart of theatreland on St Martin’s Lane.

I’m not a member but begged events manager there Sarah de Quidt  for a sneak inside – just so that we can see what we’re missing (or of course fall at the first hurdle and join)…

A home from home contemporary space with serious fun drinks and an eclectic feel is exactly what founder Ronald Ndoro was looking to create here.  A hub in the West End where dynamic art consultants Art Naked (Tani Burns and Andrew Hancock) would curate innovative exhibitions and where Nicola Robinson (It’s Rude to Stare AND the DJ as my 40th!) and Cecily Mullins would organise fabulous events such as literary talks, book readings, live music and a little dancing.

The kitchen isn’t quite open yet (end of the Summer).  Nor is the gym.  But the roof terrace, a private dining room and 6 bedrooms (with a 24-hour concierge) are.  So now is the time to get ahead in life, to make that deal… as a member.

Library is offering to waive the joining fee (£250) for the first 10 Life of Yablon readers who get in touch with Sarah: 0203 302 7912 Annual membership costs £850.

Barrafina now in Covent Garden

Covent Garden Royal Opera HouseI’ve been looking for an excuse to nip into Covent Garden ever since I learnt that there lies a Moleskin stand-alone store on King Street.  The small shop opened in April as is part of a host of the brand’s roll-out into creative-met-hubs including New York, Paris and Bejing.

Moleskin choice of notebooksAnyway, for someone who has always at least 3 notebooks on-the-go at any one time, this is my idea of ruled, squared and blank bliss.

So there I was this morning, faced with impossible choices of colour, size and thickness of paper.

In the end, I settled upon a handbag size sketch book.  Probably the only remaining size I have yet to scribble in.

Barrafina Covent GardenFood news in Covent Garden doesn’t get bigger than my lunch review location.  Barrafina – the Soho Spanish bar phenomenon – opened this week on Adelaide Street.

Barrafina Covent GardenI asked a couple of ladies who love to lunch to join me but- alas – with the end of school year mere minutes away, all were busy.  And that’s when it struck me.  To eat/review alone would be more than fine: no reason to excuse my compulsive camera habit, no need to check they are enjoying their food, no need to chat.  Instead, I could catch up on the gossip from the waitress, read my magazine, check my email and of course eavesdrop on other conversations (one of my regular vices).

Barrafina Covent GardenI ate a judion, fennel and smoked salmon salad (£6.50), an oyster (£3.80) and a single prawn in tempura and fermented black garlic alioli (£7.80) from the specials board.

Barrafina Covent GardenI drank a glass of Tremendus 2013 Honorio Rubio Rioja (£5), a big bottle of sparking water (free) and an espresso.

And I definitely plan to eat alone again.

Schneider’s Making Stalin Laugh

A mate from the (school) gates mentions a play her friend has written.  Would I fancy reviewing it?

And there it is again… the place where no blogger dares to tread…because what if I absolutely hate it?  How can I possibly report that a friend-of-a-friend’s work is lousy?

But the friend is David Schneider, so I can relax a little.  And the gate-mate is pretty highbrow, striking me as someone who wouldn’t book a babysitter for any bit of tat.

JW3 cultural centre

However, I did walk into Making Stalin Laugh (JW3 Centre) a little blind.  But perhaps if I had been aware of its subject, I might have slightly swerved.  Yiddish, King Lear, wartime Moscow dramatics and Stalinist oppression aren’t exactly my chosen subjects.  However, last night, I walked out of the theatre in complete awe of Schneider’s achievement.

Making Stalin Laugh - directed by Matthew Lloyd

Making Stalin Laugh – directed by Matthew Lloyd

The story, focusing on Russia between mid 1920s – 1952, is actually a celebration of drama, comradeship and leadership amid adverse times. Schneider – better know for lighthearted I ‘m Alan Partridge or perhaps as one of the super-power-tweeters – draws on his Yiddish doctorate days at Oxford as well as some more recent extensive digging internationally before scripting his tale.  And it really is the most unusual tale which will enlighten all, even those who profess to know everything surrounding the Second World War atrocities.

Simon Annand JW3 MSL Production 5Centre stage is Shostakovich’s star performer, a charismatic (slightly dictatorial) Solomon Mikhoels who controls the lives of his theatre company.  “Russia is one of the least anti-Semitic countries in the world.  Here everyone gets rounded up and killed,”  comments the egotistical character who is played by an astoundingly powerful Darrell D’Silva.  And it is quite extraordinary that Schneider’s characters do manage to survive the years of arrests and executions … until the final gun shots of 1952.

Not a light hearted evening, I should add but He and I were enthralled enough to stay on after the play for a Q&A with the playwright himself.

Making Stalin LaughProbably the most dramatic scene for me was where Mikhoels breaks down as he reveals how utterly ashamed he had felt deriving satisfaction from making Stalin laugh.  So I asked Schneider if he had ever made someone he absolutely loathe laugh?  And, if so, how had it made him feel?  He responded:  this is the very crux of the play for me.  The answer is lots of people lots of times because I feel an overwhelming urge to make everyone laugh most of the time – irrespective of whether or not I like them.David Schneider

And so it seems that there might may been a little of Mikhoels in Schneider himself.

The fact that this play has been so well received and will hopefully travel far and wide is indeed a celebration of Yiddish theatre and – as David says – a two-fingered salute to Stalin.
