Nina at Fred Segal

PING. Have you been to Fred Segal yet? And if not, why not?

PING. I hope you can go alone?

PING. Ok well it’s better to go with family in tow than not to go at all…

Fred Segal Broadway

These were my instructions. Someone was on my case. She knew how much I would love this iconic shopping destination, which first opened its doors in 1960. And I didn’t even make it to the main emporium downtown but Santa Monica’s hip fashion and beauty brand emporium certainly didn’t disappoint.

Upon entering, we quickly split into a boys and girls team. Mini and I rushed off with the proverbial clock ticking loudly in our ears.

She’s a total magpie so was drawn to the semi-precious stones in the Nina at Segal boutique and immediately worked out we could make our own friendship bracelets.

I needed little persuasion. So much choice, zillions of pretty jewel stones and charms and clasps and leather strings.

Mini chose jade and jasper for hers with a silver clasp and I opted for amethyst with gold.

The prices are surprisingly reasonable (anything bespoke usually hikes up the cost) but we skipped away with our new wrist candy for less than $60 dollars. And of course the best of friends.

an organic breakfast with Dahliana Natural

Los Angeles Santa Monica

Before we left for our road trip, I begged Liz from A Beautiful World for an intro. Already a little curious by the award-winning skincare brand, Dahliana Natural, I was keen enough to drag myself out for breakfast this morning to meet the founder Carola May.

Los Angeles Santa Monica

Actually, it was rather divine to cross many a road on the way up Ocean Avenue without holding a small hand. And to have a non-family breakfast after all these days of travelling together!

Carola suggested that we meet at Cora’s Coffee Shoppe, an organic café boasting that almost everything on their menu is sourced from Santa Monica’s Farmers Market.

Cora's Coffee Shoppe

A combination of German raised, Ashram chilled and Californian residing makes Carola fascinating company. She could be massively exotic and totally affected but she isn’t. She’s straightforward and real. A bit like her skincare range.

We chat about her training as a nurse, her exposure to both dermatological science as well as the power of plant based medicine, her free spirit and the passion she has for all things sustainable and chemical-free.

Why Dahliana? Dahliana was inspired from the visits with my Mom in Germany in the beautiful Dahlia gardens of Hamburg. Dahliana symbolizes the Dahlia flower that attracts all butterflies, bees and supports a healthy ecosystem.

Which products did you use before Dahliana?  I used many different skincare lines and was never quite satisfied. It was very frustrating and my skin was very reactive to chemicals.

How dangerous is it for us to use chemicals on our face?  I don’t think anybody really knows, however, having read studies that show links between chemicals and Breast Cancer has me inspired to continue striving to produce high quality natural skincare products…

Which of your products do you consider to be the most innovative?  Our star product is called Overnight Fruit Lift and I truly believe it’s the most effective natural product I have ever encountered!

Your packaging is so beautiful, how important is this for you? Very important – I want everyone to experience Dahliana as a gift.

Where/how do you turn off from everyday stress? Daily nature walks and meeting my friends for tea.

Is California the center of the anti-aging universe I think anti-aging was born here in California and will always remain. California has a unique progressive attitude that seems to be an inspiration for the rest of the world.

Are you currently working on new product launches?  We are working on a new formula for 2015

Where do you love to holiday? Near my friends and family in Hawaii, Hamburg and Palm Springs.

Tell us a beauty secret. I love to dab a little of Dahliana’s Eye Crème on my upper lip for extra hydration and it actually gets rid of those pesky fine lines!

Who is your beauty hero?  My husband Isaac who is always up for trying out our new formulations and shares my beauty vision.

Time flies as I’m clearly having too much fun. I could have easily spent the rest of day with Carola but instead she runs off to exercise (of course, this is LA!) and I trot back to my people by the pool. But before we part, she shows me a secret little path down to the beach (see above). It’s naturally pretty and feels very unspoilt in this city of angels. A perfect reflection of the woman I have just interviewed.

As my going-back-to-hotel present, Carola gifts me her Resveratrol Antioxidant Serum so look out for a blog post reviewing this product.

Dahliana Natural is available exclusively in the UK at A Beautiful World

Sponsored post: Speedo breaks me out of Alcatraz

Speedo and I were a match made in heaven long before I discovered their fitness app.  And then the swimwear’s sponsorship of my blog this month has basically been the icing on the pool.

So when a box of flipper-shaped goodies arrived for me before we set off on our California road trip adventure, I named it deep sea treasure and immediately substituted out clothes to make room for the items.

this swimsuit, fins, paddles and googles were all in my deep sea treasure…

A little bit of background about my love affair with swimming. When I think back to the toughest times of my life, only a plough up and down a lane pool would make me feel any better. And help me think any clearer. It’s my sport go-to for head fog, muscle ache or just pure escapism.

Carmel Valley Ranch swimming pool

The moment we hit the ranch, Mini and I explored to find the swimming pool. We found two. One for adults only (which would never work on our type of family holiday) and one with 2 lanes plus some open water – perfect for me to keep an eye on the Smalls while I count up to 50.

Speedo Fit is an ideal way to keep count of the lengths you’ve swum each day and shows you how close you are to achieving your goal. In my case, reaching the Golden Gate Bridge from that infamous prison.

There are 11 other swim challenges from 600m to 160,000m but swimmers can also find their local pool opening times and even connect with others who are going up and down and up and down and up and down….

Smalls play it safe in the sun

Every summer, I struggle to work out which of the latest kids’ sun creams on the market are best.

High factor, pure organic, full coverage… each of them seems to promise it all.

So I thought I’d carry out some research this year and road test a few while away in California. And… seeing as my Smalls are more than a little opinionated (!)… I’m taking their word (within reason) as to which creams should score the points.

high factor sun cream for kids

Here is their shortlist:

Lavera spf 30 baby & children sun cream: 6/10 while coverage was good the thick white cream didn’t impress the almost 10 year old. However, she DID find it funny when I applied it to my face…

Aubrey Kids Natural Sun spf 30: 9.5/10 as the gun spray is fun, the cream is easy to rub in, the smell is nice and… well, I am told that no sun cream can ever score 10/10 because it’s not that much fun…

Organic Children sun lotion medium spf25: 5/10 simply because it’s too thick.

Green People spf25 sun lotion: 9/10 we were all massive fans. Delicious smell and easy to run in with the reassurance that you could still see you were protected.

Sunsense Ultra spf50: 9/10 this is a no-nonsense roll on. Cream isn’t sticky, applies easy, protects well AND fits in my handbag (essential in cities).

Nivea Sun kids spf50:  8/10 Fail safe and comes in handy sizes but just lacks any excitement (and the last bit is hard to get out of bottle).

I hope this helps shed some (sun)light. Sadly it sounds like we won’t need any of the above once home in London this weekend…
