mahabis: a tale of more than slippers

Are you sitting comfortably? And, I mean REALLY comfortably with happy feet? Then I’ll begin. Because I have a good story to tell – one of comfort, design, aesthetics, innovation and some brilliant marketing.

Once-upon-a-time, in a land we like to call Earth lived a man called Ankur. Each and every day he scratched his head because his feet weren’t happy. For when he was out of the house, he had plenty of well-designed footwear options but once indoors (where he spent a great deal of his day), he simply couldn’t find a pleasing slipper, let alone one which he could customize.

Crocs, Havaianas, Campers… were all rejected. Nothing lived up to his pedi-desires.   As he searched and searched, it became evident to him that actually he had been sent to this Earth to design and manufacture slippers for the people.

Not all the people, I should add, only those who would understand his mahabis mission of detachable revolutionary sole, of cool colour choices, of everyday perfection.

mahabis slippers

And so, in August of this year, the initial product from the lord and master at mahabis was born.

News spread fast via Instagram and other cool consumer groups and within days these new slippers were travelling worldwide to find appreciating feet. I managed to drag mine OFF my feet to leave the house last week – in search of an interview with this fairytale marketing hero.

As it turns out, Ankur’s home and lifestyle are perfectly colour coordinated to match his products. And even his calculated calm manner fits the brand too. Much like the slippers, I found him pretty inspiring.

why did you feel so strongly that the slipper needed redefining? It was an age-old product, something that people always buy and yet it hadn’t changed. In a world obsessed with high performance, it struck me that no-one was focusing on downtime, or working out how to enhance the products that help us relax, feel at home and comfortable.

which brand did you wear before you launched mahabis? Muji. I wore a lot of Muji. And got through a lot of their products. Then Havaianas. I love Havaianas. They make me feel like I’m on the beach. But it turned out I wasn’t the only one to ‘make do’. When I looked into it, I saw people with broken Vans, Toms and Converse -all potential slippers- but never really quite there.

have you ever designed footwear before?  Never.

mahabis-slippers

how did you choose your sole colours? They just seemed to amplify timeless colours, but weren’t too predictable. We wanted to reinforce our Scandinavian inspired, unisex aesthetic, which meant colours that could be worn by anyone. I hope we’ve achieved that.

have you ever worn your mahabis out for the day?  I actually love wearing them around the office!

do you entertain at home in slippers? Yes, I sometimes sing and dance in them, if that’s what you meant…

do you have spare pairs for your guests? So many! Our cat is buried deep in a pile of them! We love the way the Japanese provide slippers for their guests, it’s a beautiful sentiment.

MAHABIS-SLIPPERS-2

who would you love to wear your slippers? We’ve made our slippers to be worn by everyone, I’d be as delighted seeing the Dalai Lama wearing them as I would Snoop Dogg, and of course, anyone and everyone in between.

what were you doing when the mahabis idea came to you? Very little.

what’s the global plan for the brand? mahabis has already sold to customers in over 50+ countries and we’re really focused on a global direct roll out. We have some key territories we’re focusing on in the coming 12 months, but importantly the feedback has been universally positive. It seems like we’re crossing national borders and locking into a universal design aesthetic, that was my ambition from the start and I’d be delighted if we get anywhere near to that.

where might we find you having some time out? On a secret bohemian beach a few hours from London.

The fact that Mahabis slippers are only sold here online (but of course ship worldwide) is no slipper accident. The best marketing and product plans have been laid and you haven’t seen anything yet… as I said… this is so much more than a slipper story.

jools & stone

jools & stone

A while ago a friend (Juliet/Jules aka jools) told me of her new business idea with her friend (Michelle née/aka stone) before showing me a sneak preview of the recently designed jewels. And since then I’ve waited patiently for jools & stone‘s line of sparkles to launch. But good things come to those who wait and I was no less excited to see the full range a couple of weeks ago as the girls invited me over and rolled out the gems onto the dining room table.

jools & stone

I was so dazzled by the jewels that I couldn’t work out what to point my lens at first. So instead we dug into the cupcakes and tried on everything before I persuaded them to allow me to shoot their pretty mugs for their marketing.

Here is my interview with this brand new, beyond stunning jewellery line:

describe the launch collection in 3 words: simple precious discreet

what has inspired this collection?  The idea behind the collection was very simple – we wanted to create white t-shirt jewellery that we would wear every day ourselves. Effortlessly luxurious pieces that you can throw on for an exercise class, wear in the shower, and then layer up at night. Things that make you feel great when you wear them without shouting out at anyone else across the street. Basically we make the things that we want to wear ourselves.

jools & stone

who would you love to see wearing your pieces? Anyone who loves wearing them.

where can we view the collection?  We are currently stocked at the Athenaeum Hotel and Apartments on Piccadilly, and the Grove hotel in Hertfordshire.

who would be your ideal stockist? Dover Street Market

which pieces do you wear every day?

Jules – I always wear two ear cuffs and a diamond pinky ring. I literally never take them off.

Michelle – I wear the hammered gold hoop earrings, which were the first piece we ever designed, and a stack of gold bangles.

have you ever worked together before?  No but we have known each other since we were teenagers, which makes things much easier.

jools & stone

who wears more jewels?  We tend to wear slightly different pieces, but neither of us pack it on. We both believe less is more.

who is the designer?  We both design, which is our favourite part of the business. We have slightly different personal styles, so we each bring something different to the table.

what can we expect next from jools & stone?  lots of earrings. We are both obsessed about earrings.

tell us a jewel secret  Stop your chains from knotting by leaving a short section poking out of your jools & stone pouch. And if you are only going to wear one item, make it earrings.

Don’t just take my word for it… pop into The Athenaeum or the Grove (who are showcasing the jewels) or jump into their site right now!

NB  everything is made to order, with a four to six week delivery date.

all power to the duvet day

We’re all muttering the same thing.  Like a broken Mummy record.

“Such a long term this is!” “If only they weren’t so exhausted!” “these short dark days are getting to us” “… just got to keep going…”

Except that Mini and I decided to call a stop to it all today.  There she was dressed and ready to head out of the front door when I decided to take a closer look at her pale face, watery eyes and red, sore nose.  And there I saw the light: keeping the show on the road isn’t always the way forward.  Because sometimes the horse can simply refuse to jump.

Before I could say ‘pass me the Calpol’, she had run upstairs, whipped off her uniform and was lying on the sofa in a onesie.  And she has hardly moved since.  Only to play with my camera, write a few Christmas cards, sketch a little in her scrapbook and squeeze some prescribed juicy oranges.

Mini and her duvet day

Mini and her duvet day

In my book, these days are called Duvet Days.  Staying at home and doing a little nothing, recharges those running-low batteries and  (hopefully) avoids any lurking sickness.  And it’s forced me to stay put too.  The two of us have caught up on her school stories (with no one to interrupt), sorted out the mess which was her bedroom and even done a little festive online shopping too.  So break the record and give someone you love a Duvet Day this week.

Hadid collaborates with the House of Mouzannar

You know, this really is the beginning of silly season… He and I are already double-booking, timings and logistics are pure chaos and I’m just hoping I don’t accidentally leave a Small somewhere random between now and Christmas.

On Thursday evening I glanced at the diary, only to find that there was NO physical way I could swing by the unveiling of a rather special cuff over on Goswell Road.

And I was a bit annoyed, to be honest. As this is no normal cuff. Designed by Dame Zaha Hadid, the 18ct white gold set with 1048 diamonds beauty – entitled Seline – is a collaboration between the award-winning architect and a very talented Lebanese duo behind jewellery house Aziz & Walid Mouzannar.

But there was simply no way I could make it.

So, I rejigged my weekend and swung by the 2-day pop up at Zaha Hadid Design Gallery on Saturday so that I could also take a closer squint at the showcased collections from Dori and Alia Mouzannar (not yet available in the UK).

A little Lebanese jewel history for you – the Mouzannar family established their jewellery brand in the mid-18th century and, despite the horrors of the Lebanese Civil War, are globally renowned as one of the finest jewellery houses in the Middle East. I did try to work out the family tree but was then side-tracked by the sparkles. In short, The House of Aziz and Walid Mouzannar is now run by Alia and Dori Mouzannar who are six-generation cousins.

Both Alia and Dori design contemporary Middle Eastern treasures which are spectacular yet wearable – a fine line to cross.

As I chatted away to the designers, admiring their stunning work while relaxing into my Exeter Street Bakery brunch, I suddenly realised it was time to hurry West to pick up a small ballet dancer…
