film review: Force Majeure

force-majeure-cannes-21

I should have been partying really hard last night at a friend’s 40th. Instead I was feeling mighty below par on the sofa under a blanket. Alongside Him.

So we decided to watch the film they say marrieds shouldn’t watch. Not because it is anything other than a genius piece of screenplay but because Östlund’s Force Majeure is (apparently) a direct reflection of our marriage, family dynamics and probably includes the script of nay argument we might have had on a ski slope.

Force Majeure film 2014The film is the story of a middle-class family taking a holiday in the French Alps. However, don’t be fooled into thinking this ice-cold Swedish drama makes for light-hearted viewing. Tension is rife from the outset (not helped by an on-off Vivaldi soundtrack) as we sense something rather life-changing is about to happen (even when it isn’t).

The catastrophe actually takes place when Tomas and Ebba are eating lunch at an open-air mountaintop restaurant with their children. The view is epic; as is the supposedly controlled avalanche. Tomas even takes out his phone to record the falling snow before it becomes evident that this tidal wave of white stuff is whooshing directly towards them at huge speed.

This is the moment you need to really concentrate. Screams, terrified skiers and a complete white-out drives Ebba to (instinctively) grab her small children while her husband snatches his gloves and phone and legs it.

And this act of cowardice, selfishness and self-protection over his family’s safety is one his wife simply can’t stomach. In fact, worse still, it festers and festers until it rots the holiday.

How curious then that this film was quite so therapeutic to watch. He and I discussed how Tomas reacted. Not just at the moment of crisis (you never know exactly how you will respond) but afterwards and as his wife tells and re-tells the dramatic story. Even more curiously, I think I felt more sorry for pathetic Tomas than He did.

Knowing that Force majeure means a legal concept which allows you to get out of a contractual obligation (an act of God that means you can’t be sued), I wondered afterwards if the unspoken contract binding our family together is simply nullified in a crisis. OR if this is the point that the contract is most valid?

Either way, this is definitely one to watch. And, if you’ve already seen it, let me know what you think!

Sunuva in a sunny Soho

Sunuva Spring/Summer 2015

Sunuva Spring/Summer 2015

With only a few remaining days of these Easter (endless) school holidays, I scooped up mine plus one and headed into a pretty, sunny Soho. First stop was to drop into the Ham Yard Hotel where the kids beachwear brand, Sunuva was hosting their S/S15 press day.

Sunuva Spring/Summer 2015

What originally began as a (much needed) designer swimwear and UV rash vest brand, the collection now offers a complete wardrobe for ages 6 months to 14 years. Mine were knee-high to grass hoppers back then when I couldn’t wait to swap the boring navy blue rash vests (we burn easily) for Sunuva’s stunning and very kid-cool designs.

From Ham Yard, I decided we needed to see some Soho sights.  First stop was a little comic culture. Gosh – on Berwick Street – at first glance looks like just another book shop. But when you look closer, you suddenly realised that every single book is a cover-to-cover comic strip.

Next the girls were adamant that we should check out a fabric shop. There was something about the sparkly nylon which clearly caught their eye!

Last stop (pre a sushi fest) was Reckless Records as they wanted to choose Him an early birthday present. [I won’t say which one they chose just on the (slim) chance He’s reading this!]  Ever since I found an old record player in a local charity shop, they do love a little vinyl on a Sunday afternoon. It’s amusing how something so retro can feel very novel.

The lovely girls at Sunuva are VERY generously offering you all a special Life of Yablon 20% discount on the entire collection.  Just use this code: lifeofyablon20 at the checkout (before 12th June 2015) and – if you’re on instagram, tag both @sunuva and @lifeofyablon into your travels this summer!

Story Deli. For pizza hipsters.

Where are all your restaurant reviews? I was asked earlier this week. OH…. I did used to do restaurant reviews, didn’t I… I thought. That was before I dipped my proverbial toe into the office world and my freelance life simply evaporated.

The thing is I DO still need to eat. And I love reporting how much I love/hate those eateries far and wide… but, if I’m really honest, these days I’m reaching for my tracksuit more often than my heels post Small-people bedtime.

However, I plan to eat more (such a good plan). In restaurants you might quite like too. So don’t despair, just yet.

Pizza was on the menu last Friday night. Quite frankly, I don’t think I’ve EVER fantasied about a pizza. BUT everything I had heard about Story Deli (bearing in mind its minimalist, white-washed look is all over Instagram) meant it was high up on my foodie hit list. (Just as soon as I could slip out of that tracksuit.)

So while He and his mates planned a boys’-night-in, I travelled east as quickly as my north-west legs could carry me. And in deepest Shoredich, I found photographer-friend ready and waiting for some much needed cold beer – with hot pizza.

Yes, it’s all about the base. And these wafer-thin bases are just my carb-cup-of-tea. They simply exist to hold the super-fresh, organic toppings. Piled up higher and more delicious than you could ever imagine.

I had heard that you can’t linger in this super cool white hideout. But we properly lingered at the long table with the pizza hipsters. What else do you need to know? Well, you can’t book, the pizzas cost £17 and it would definitely be rude to share. Oh and you need cash.

Right, I’m off to change into that tracksuit.

Oh… HELLO sunshine

IMG_1887_2Oh… HELLO sunshine. We’re very pleased to meet you but did have just a couple of quick questions: Are you here to stay? Or just flirting a little warmth and brightness in our direction. You see, your big, bold entrance needs a little planning. And, if you are in fact here to stay, our winter toes and hibernation legs (ditto working upwards) need to know.

But if you’re going to be gone tomorrow, we can simply relax. Bundled up in lots of layers is the only way we really know how to dress. A hot sun only confuses British fashion and – let’s face – sandals are a minefield to negotiate.

Picnics, BBQs and a freezer full of ice-cream need planning too. Are lunchtime soups already VERY last month? What about sunglasses, umbrellas and that extended scarf?

So while we’re very happy to hear the birds chirping, to walk home in evening light and to feel the presence of a yellow ball of glow in the sky, it’s just that we need to know if you’re teasing. Are you part of some big joke?

Do let us know before there’s a hosepipe ban.
