I’m all in a lather.

Yes, you read that right.  I am all in a lather.  And my hair is a trifle confused too.  In fact, the blow-dried strands don’t have a clue what’s going on.  All they can establish is that I step into the shower each day with a different looking bottle of shampoo.  There’s a world recession, never-ending war in the Middle East and I’m hunting a new world of hair care.  But, I should add, my criteria are strict.  Be assured, it’s not by any stroke of luck that these bottles of hair soap appear in my top five.  Each and every finalist really will change our hair-lives.

my top 5 shampoos for the die-hard beauty lovers

Ok, so that first paragraph will have thrown off any shampoo-loving imposters.  Only my die-hard beauty lovers will read on.   And this post is for you, those of us who are curious as to what does and doesn’t make a good hair cleanse.  Right, let’s get technical.

Because our shower water varies across the country, Area H20 has been busy in a lab testing metal ions in each water type. And now that they ‘get it’, the haircare specialist has developed a range of shampoos that can rid our locks of these mineral deposits.  A true Einstein moment, for the hair world, I should imagine. London-based chicks – we are afflicted with hard water (just take a look inside your kettle) and even one wash with Area H20 Shampoo £9.95 descaled my hair to leave it feeling smoother and less flyaway.

Evo Gluttony Shampoo.  Where to start?  What a name! Hilarious packaging, brilliant marketing, a celebrity following – and that’s all before we even get wet.  This delicious smelling ‘protein and film formers’ get right into and onto each hair strand and totally glossed me up.  At £10.60, a perfect girlfriend gift – if she too is a hair-lover.

finally, a shampoo with a sense of humour

Yes to Tomatoes Volumising Shampoo(£8.20/500ml) gave me the big hair I needed for the Elbow concert at Wembley last night.  Just one of the numerous shampoos from Big Green Smile (currently my online pit stop for all beauty potions), I’d recommend this one as a great value buy that does what it says on its bottle.

As we enter the retoxifying Christmas period, we can at least detox and rebalance our locks with Evolve Organic Beauty Detox and Protect Shampoo £9.99. Coconut extracts and moringa seed (often nicknamed the miracle seed for its multi-nutritional benefits) remove impurities and pollution while simultaneously rebalancing your hair pH.

Any false-blonde will know that the last week before you miraculously turn blonder is always the trickiest.  Well, Organic Colour Systems Status Quo is all you need to tie you over until the foils are in.  Completely free from salt (a bulking agent used in many shampoos and conditioners that usually strip colour) this winner has brightened up my over-due highlights no end.

Join me in washing any dullness, hard water or plain old dirt right out of your hair.

Swinging and Punching with Born Blonde, Gavin The Champ and Elbow

Abbey Road Studios

Yesterday began at Abbey Road Studios.  A guest of Absolute Radio, I swung by to hear Born Blonde record a session as part of the radio station’s support of upcoming bands.  I hadn’t heard of Born Blonde (nor the other bands recording for that matter) but immediately loved the sound of this seriously-about-to-break band.  If you’re a fan of the Verve and/or Stone Roses, you will like these retro guitar heroes.  Their tunes are more than decent; twinkly, happy with some original sentimentality. Have a listen and let me know what you think.

The PRs at the studios were polite enough not to question why I was in my workout gear.  Time was of the essence.  I had arranged to meet The Blonde at Sport Studios where Gavin The Champ, world-class kick boxing champion, had promised to take our fitness to a whole new level.  In fact, his website actually promises ‘pain and suffering’.  Sports Studios was founded (and is still run) by Gavin’s dad, George Mckenzie, who also holds numerous world championship titles under his belt.

Of course it hurt.  But it was an awful lot of fun at the same time.  The Blonde is hard core so impressed him much.  I just did my best and enjoyed learning some right hook technique while getting some real exercise.  Once we had booked for next week, we crawled back to our respective showers before the school run.

And last but not least was ‘my’ humble, northern Guy Garvey of alternative rock band Elbow at Wembley arena.  I first became aware of Elbow in my AOL days, when we recorded a session with the band (around 12 years ago I think – correct me AOL-ers if I have this wrong).  Never having been commercially huge in the past, they were one of the bands to benefit from performing at the Olympic closing ceremony. After singing One Day Like This, they saw a massive boost in sales prompting them to add another date or two to their 2012 tour.

Last night’s concert was a chilled affair.  Wembley was by no means packed to the rafters but those who were there were fully swinging to Garvey’s undoubtedly beautiful voice.  The highlight for me was their rendition (in the centre of the arena) of The Night Will Always Win. It certainly raised a few goose bumps.

I was a guest of Absolute Radio who are hand-picking new and emerging artists to perform for the Absolute Radio Presents the Abbey Road Acoustic Sessions.

You know Giles Coren. Now meet the wife.

Behind every clever man, as we know, lurks a pretty fabulous wife.  Earlier this month, Giles’ meant-for-The-Times Skyfall article never made the paper.  It was too damn brilliant for The Times to understand its relevance.  Instead, the food critic posted the piece of prose on wife-journalist Esther Walker’s blog for her readers (and his Twitter followers) to enjoy.

Esther gets chopping once she has got over the shock I have no apron!

Recipe Rifle is Esther’s pocket of the www. There she posts her recipes and so much more.  I feasted (excuse the pun) on a large quantity of her daily musings and roared away at my laptop.  And then I couldn’t help myself but get in touch.  NOT because she’s married to him who we all, of course, can’t help but adore but because she is quite brilliant entirely in her own right.

I always wonder what’s it’s like to be wife-of-blah-blah.  I mean He is obviously great and all that but not necessarily a household bit of totty.  Esther (known as The Bad Cook in the literary world – the e-book of her blog launches in Feb next year) popped over last week to show me how to cook her Asian Baked Salmon but also so that we could chat food, Hims, parenting (Kitty is almost 2 and she has one more on the way) and our lives as bloggers.

Girls, she’s fabulous fun.  Boys, she’s quite a catch.  Coren did well.

the salmon fillets looking asian

What makes you reach for your apron?  Dinnertimes rolling round yet again and mouths to feed.

What makes you decide to do one recipe over another?  Not too many strange ingredients and not too many carbs.

Who taught you to cook? NO-ONE! I am entirely self-taught. As my guests might be able to tell.

too much chatting and Esther forgot the 5 spice!

Do you dream about food? Never.

Does Giles criticize your cooking? Only incredibly politely and helpfully.

How often do you eat out? It depends – it used to be three or four times a week, now maybe once a week.

Can you mass cater? I can but I find it a bit stressful – Giles does most of the entertaining cookery.

Best TV dinner? Baked potato, cheese, sour cream, butter, salt and pepper, Tabasco & beer.

Shocking recipe disaster? Oh god some very undercooked chicken once. And a stew where I hadn’t browned the meat and onions off first. It was for a dinner party and the onions were basically raw. It was AWFUL. Shudder.

Tell us what you would blog about if it wasn’t food. I’d just moan on about motherhood I suppose.

How do you cook with morning sickness? You DON’T, or you do it in short bursts between lying down and groaning.

Are you a Jamie or Heston gal? God are you mad? Jamie.

Best meal you’ve ever had in London? I absolutely love Ceviche in Soho but my first proper smart dinner that really blew my mind was in The Glasshouse in Kew.

Where would we find you with an afternoon to yourself? I wish I could say in an art gallery or going for a walk but I’d probably be poking about on the Internet or in Brent Cross.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given? “When in doubt, do nothing.”

Fav non-cook book? Lucky Jim by Kingsley Amis

Who would you LOVE to cook for? Prince Harry, he looks like a massive laugh and also the mega posh never mind about bad food.

Who would you love to cook for YOU? Anyone who can make good sushi. Or dim sum.

Can Giles cook? Yes, he’s very good. He’s a generous, imaginative and brave cook, whereas I am timid, bitter and lazy.

Tell us a Coren secret. Giles is incredibly ticklish and is a huge Blondie fan.

dinner is served later to an impressed Him

The best of Recipe Rifle will be available to download as an e-book called THE BAD COOK (£1.89) from Feb 2013.

never too early for PJs

Smalls in Sunuva pjs

The Smalls have definitely inherited from me a love of pjs, duvets and all things sleep related.  In my world, if we’re home and not planning to leave the house again before bedtime, then it’s never too early to switch outdoor clothes for those we sleep in.  And that’s really the way I see it.  Pjs aren’t just for sleeping in – they are indoor cozy clothes, which you can also sleep in. (Just for the record, my current favourite are the Cowshed pjs from Hush).

So when the Smalls walked through the door yesterday after school and caught sight of these fabulous new pyjamas from the team at Sunuva, they couldn’t see any reason not to run a bath and pop them straight on – even though it was only 4pm.

For those of you who don’t shop at Sunuva– my pale skinned, freckly kids couldn’t holiday without their super stylish swimsuits, trunks and the all-important sun-protecting rashes.  And because they have feminine puffed sleeves and dangly detail, Mini absolutely approves.

Beckham’s Harper – also in Sunuva

Pyjamas are the latest addition to the Sunuva collection and, judging by the Smalls’ initial feedback, they’ll be as popular in our house as the swimwear is on the beach.

COMPETITION:  If you would like to win a pair of Sunuva pyjamas (£45) for your smalls, I have two pairs to give away.  All you have to do is sign up to my blog (top right of homepage),  follow me on Twitter and fill in your details here. Competition NOW ends on Friday 21st December 2012 and winners will be notified by email.

Sunuva is stocked in many a department store including: Harrods, Selfridges, Liberty, House Of Fraser, Harvey Nichols and Fenwick of Bond Street.
