new year = new bag (Anna Kreeger’s M. Hulot)

Last week I was early for a meeting. So I decided I was fully entitled to a mooch.  Now, before those (particularly Lady Y) who have previously swallowed the Oxford English Dictionary raise their brows, I have just looked up the verb – to mooch – and it absolutely exists.  A certainly curly-haired university friend first introduced me to the concept of MOOCHING.  She’d call me and ask me if I fancied a mooch.  I was, understandably, a little concerned at first but soon realised that she simply meant to wander aimlessly up and down a busy high street.  Anyway, last week I mooched along Marylebone Lane.

KJ’s Laundry on Marylebone Lane

And while in KJ’s Laundry, one of my favourite little boutiques, I mooched right into a classic, urban-cool bag designed by Anna Kreeger, founder of M. Hulot.  Cross-body, snappy-zips with fine, soft, natural leather – it quite literally stopped me in my tracks (do you like the drama?).  Always on the hunt for up-and-coming labels, I quickly took a pic of the bag and, with Miss Marple detective skillks, managed to contact the designer herself.

a selection of bags at KJ’s Laundry

Having worked for all the big brands and retailers (from Browns and M&S to Jigaw and Clarks), Anna launched M. Hulot last Autumn in direct response to the throw away culture of high street fashion. Her designs are minimalistic yet feminine and are made out of the most scrumptious leather.

Here is my interview with my newest bag lady:

Do you come from an entrepreneurial family?  No. My dad’s a vicar and My mum’s a teacher! They don’t know the industry and business AT ALL, but are very supportive!

Are you a leather snob?  Yes, I am now! I have always been obsessed by materials and texture, and working with leather goods has made me even more so.

What’s in your handbag?  I try to travel light as much as possible, so not much on an everyday basis: wallet, diary, minimal make up, business cards and a book!

a classic Jas MB

Which handbag designers do you admire?  I gravitate to designers such as Jas MB and Ally Capellino for their beautiful simplicity, practicality and quality.  For super luxury I adore Celine, Reed Krakoff and Jil Sander.

Where do you shop (for clothes)? I shop at Cos and Uniqlo on the high street, but if I’m looking for something different I head to Hub in Stoke Newington, YMC or my friend Tash’s vintage store on Broadway market, Hackney.

Where would you love to see M. Hulot stocked? Darkroom, one of my dream stockists, have just bought my Strapped Howe clutches for next season so that’s one ticked off already!  I would also love to be stocked at Liberty, Barneys, New York and Merci Paris.

Anna and I met back at KJ’s Laundry to discuss bags

Best book ever written? Don’t know about ‘best ever’ but love so many of Murakami’s books and have particular affection for The Glass Palace by Amitav Ghosh – the only book I’ve ever read twice.

Social media or local pub? Definitely local pub – one of life’s small pleasures!

Fav winter boots? I treated myself to a pair of Chloe boots a few years ago now, when I first reaped the rewards of a freelance wage.

the Wheeler bag I fell for modelled by the designer herself

Where would we find you taking some time out? Having a walk around Alexandra Palace park (just behind my flat) and enjoying the views over London or meeting friends in Hackney.

Who would you love to wear your bags? The ultimate compliment would be to see the fashion editors wearing them.

What does M. Hulot have in store for us for next season? A large and grown-up bowling bag, a fresh take on a bucket shape, a small cross body bag that can also be worn as a clutch and lots and lots of colour!

Garrard clutch

BLOODSHOT VODKA: the brunch staple according to Mark D Hill

Interviewing Mark D Hill of Bloodshot fame

Could I swing by Mark D. Hill’s flat to meet the entrepreneurial mixologist and to sample his latest creation, Bloodshot Vodka? The editor of West London Living enquired.

A tough gig, I thought, as I reluctantly cancelled boot camp in the pouring rain and headed to Westbourne Grove.

the exotic bottle of spicy Vodka

A lifelong Bloody Mary obsessive, Mark is a man of more talents than boozing. The founder and executive chef of The Well Dressed Salad Company (until its sale in 2007), took a year out to write the eyebrow raising book, The Aphrodisiac Encyclopaedia, and is currently developing some land in the Andaman Islands into an exclusive Richard Branson-esque gourmet boutique hotel.  So, you see, realizing that the world needs a complex, intricately-made spirit combining more than 20 ingredients was no biggy.

Back home, that evening, I pounced on Him as he walked through the door.  Make me a Bloody Mary and let’s taste test this, I demanded, thrusting the fiery bottle of exotic spice in His direction.  Now, as he prides himself on making a mean (and until that moment unrivalled) version of what is commonly referred to as ‘the world most complicated cocktail’, this was never going to be a carefree, unemotional mission.

The result?  As bitter as this will be for Him to read, I do have to reveal that Mark’s Bloodshot Vodka tops all my previous Bloody Mary experiences.  Here is his interview:

Mark mid drink     (Sara Platt)

How often do you enjoy a bloody mary?  Extremely often!

When is Bloody Mary o’clock in your home?  Midday on weekends, bank holidays, holidays…also fridays …and the occasional Thursday.

What do you hate about West London?  I hate that it takes absolutely ages to get across town to East London – can’t wait for cross-rail.

How long have you lived in Notting Hill?  12 years.

Where would we find you having a chilled tipple with friends?  My local. Its in the heart of Notting Hill but impervious to change!

Do you dance? If so where?  Yes, however not quite so energetically as I did.  These days I am more like an oil tanker and it takes quite a bit to get me moving (but once started I find it almost impossible to stop).  I was last seen dancing whilst DJ-ing at the Bloodshot Halloween Brunch at the Brompton Bar & Grill.

How would you describe your career to date?  A white knuckle ride!

What motivates you to get out of bed?  My alarm clock – which I have strategically placed in the kitchen to ensure it gets me out of bed.  That and a desire to make things happen…

boxes ready for the Christmas season

What’s your Bloodshot dream?  To turn the world on to Bloody Marys – this classic cocktail is still relatively unknown even in West London. I regularly mix people their first.

Tell us about the reaction to your book: The Aphrodisiac Encyclopaedia.  Quite a few raised eyebrows but fortunately quite a bit a laughter too. The book is very much tongue-in-cheek with some pretty dry humour.

Larry David makes Mark chuckle

Who makes you laugh? Larry David

What can make you cry? I get very emotional watching films on planes, which I blame on the altitude.  The story of Sea Biscuit, the horse that wouldn’t except its destiny had me in floods.

Tell us a secret about West London.  Lots Road Auction House.  It’s a very exciting way to buy furniture.

Bloodshot Vodka (50cl – £19.99) is available from Waitrose, Selfridges, Ocado & Lea & Sandeman Wines.

buying into… Christmas

This is a slightly tricky post.  In fact any post, where I feel a rant coming on, can present itself as a little tricky.  There will be readers out there who feel I am inappropriate, out-spoken and a downright axe-grinder.

teacher appreciation issues

But I feel the need … so do bear with me.

I am thankful to the Smalls’ teachers.  Really, honestly, utterly thankful.  Not only do these saints take them off my hands each and every day but they teach them well and make learning fun.  However thankful I am though, I do not impersonate a more-money-than-sense Santa at this time of year by showering these teachers with over-the-top gifts.  Instead, contributing to a joint class fund in a sensible fashion allows the class rep to buy John Lewis (or the like) vouchers as an appropriate teacher thank-you.  And, my reliable sources inform me that all those recipients HUGELY appreciate this.

a Harrods delivery

Nevertheless, we don’t all follow this approach.  Some of us hurry off to purchase elaborate gifts from Harrods (their van was seen delivering to local prep school this week) and – allegedly – teachers have, in the past, been offered Louis Vuiton handbags, brand new cars and even… holidays!

louis vuitton gifts

What does this say about the parents?  Are they trying to bribe the teachers?  Do they think that their little darling would simply not get into the secondary school of their choice without this ‘leg up’?  Or do they simply have too much cash to burn?

It seems that many teachers find this extravagant behaviour plain humiliating. And, according to those willing to discuss these teacher appreciation issues, the bottom line seems that the best presents are the homemade ones, made by the children themselves.  The gifts that no money can buy.

Chanel Cresswell Trollied on Christmas Eve

Chanel Cresswell in Trollied (Jon Hall)

The actress Chanel Cresswell is primarly known for her role as Kelly in the Bafta award winning Shane Meadows film This is England.  But her talents are diverse and she has received much praise for her performance in Trollied, Sky’s comedy-sitcom set in a supermarket. The Christmas episode of Trollied will be aired on Christmas Eve.

I caught up with Chanel to find out what inspires and irritates her:

How early in your life did you know you wanted to act? When I was nine years old,  I was in the school play, Bugsy Malone and I played Blousey Brown  … typical.

Which role defined you?  Kelly from This is England has a big part of me, I have played her since I was 15 – a lot of work went into her.

Dreamer or realist?  Realist …. although I do daydream…

What inspires you?  People who try hard and know what they want to achieve.

What irritates you?  I’m pretty chilled although if people make me late or are not time aware … I do find that annoying.

Chanel Cresswell played Kelly in This Is England

Lazy morning or long run in the park?  Lazy morning …DVD…Sorted!

Westfield or shop online?   Westfield. I have to try things on and easily return them.

If you could take a flight anywhere today, where would you go?  Australia, I would go and surf and check out the Outback.

Downton or Homeland?  Downton, I haven’t caught Homeland yet.

Favourite TV dinner?  A good Thai soup

Best film ever?  Snatch. I loved it when I was at school and the music. I just wanted to be in it.

Tell us a secret.  Jason Watkins and Stephanie Beacham had a garden competition outside their rooms on set .. There were picket fences, gnomes, fake grass and bird houses on the go –  it was pretty funny!

The Trollied Christmas special airs on Christmas Eve at 9pm on Sky1HD
