Skiing with Scott Dunn: the calibre of the kids

the picture postcard stuff - St Anton

the picture postcard stuff – St Anton

There’s SO much to a ski holiday that could go wrong. And I’m not just talking about the awful prospect of broken limbs.  There’s the ridiculous amount of clobber you need to remember ALL the time, endless misunderstandings about meeting points and, of course, the seriously uncomfortable, weighty ski boots.

Yesterday we lost a glove.  One of Small’s.  Somewhere between the ski locker room and the first lift.  Something as small (literally) as this, can be enough to send you over the edge when you’re balancing more than one pair of skis on your shoulders with a blizzard in your face.

You’re getting the picture now.  The blue sky and easy turns are idyllic but they are really only the backdrop.  The real picture is the chalet comfort, the food served to hungry mouths and the organizational team picking up all those dropped gloves before you realise that you’ve even dropped them.

I am lucky enough to be a guest of Scott Dunn this week here in St Anton and, seeing as the travel company can’t control the weather, I thought I’d report back on the level of service we received.

Anyone who frequents ski chalets knows that your service is only as good as the calibre of kids catering.   (The average age of a chalet host is 19 years old.)  Our ski party (2 dad, 2 mums, 4 smalls) is staying in Chalet Christoph, just above the St Anton village.  It is one in a bank of four contemporary (yet very alpine) ‘premier’ chalets – in fact an old sawmill converted to now include a hot tub, sauna, log fire and a number of flat screen TVs.

I thought the easiest way to give you a full picture of our Scott Dunn experience would be to run through our support team:

Lucy - our Scott Dunn Chalet Service Manager

Lucy – our Scott Dunn Chalet Service Manager

Lucy, our chalet service manager, had the enjoyable task of listening to our moans and groans of noisy Chelsea neighbours (the chalet walls were thin) and an unsympathetic ski school.  We thought she coped brilliantly as she turned our wishes and gripes into suitable solutions.

Hattie - our chalet host

Joe - our Chalet Host

Joe – our Chalet Host

Hattie & Joe were our chalet hosts.  Hardworking, super friendly (without being unnervingly pally) and a pure pleasure to have around.  One was heading to LSE next year, the other to Oxford Brookes – so they were bright enough to keep us amused while young enough to play Uno with the Smalls.

Jason, our chef, is worthy of whole blog post to himself.  Enough said. (Blog post to follow).

Darren was just one of our three drivers making sure that we were seamlessly transported to our skis and the lifts (and back) without exerting any unnecessary energy.

I think you’re probably getting the picture by now.  I hardly needed to blink and a G&T was poured, a canapé offered and out rolled the 4-course dinner. And I am presuming that it’s no coincidence that every single member of the Scott Dunn team bowled us over in terms of their attitude, personality and punctuality.  So my point here is that not only are these kids carefully selected and well trained but it’s also clearly crucial that they are ‘of the right calibre’.  The Smalls have already asked me if we can ‘see them all in London’.  Gawd.  If only Scott Dunn could move in at home…

I was a guest of Scott Dunn staying in Lodge Christoph.

The family holiday was booked through The Oxford Ski Company.

Is revenge ever really sweet?

Snow White

Liberty Ross’ Snow White tweet

prednisone oral

Last week a male friend of mine phoned me in a furious panic.  Could I come over right away?  He had found strong evidence to suggest that his wife was having an affair at work.  With her boss.  The cliché rang loud and true and – of course – I flew over there with a big tin of chocolate biscuits as fast as I could.

Once the sheer shock and immediate rush of blood to the head had passed, my friend’s intense fury surfaced.  How could she do this to him?  But, I was surprised to notice that this anger had been almost immediately transferred to the other him in this sorry state of affairs (excuse pun).  The him who had ‘taken his wife’ and seduced her.  As I made him a strong cup of tea, I saw him glance at the neat stack of sharp kitchen knives.  There was no doubt, he saw RED.

Once the sugar and caffeine had kicked in, he talked about revenge.  The strong temptation of outing this romance to the world at large was consuming him.  I hadn’t really realised before just how much Twitter and Facebook provide us with a social media humiliation platform like no other.  Basicaly, we are all one click away from sharing too much with too many.

In a month where we have certainly witnessed Vicky Pryce’s (ex-wife of Chris Huhne) intense desire for revenge as she hoped to destroy her husband’s career, I started to think about whether or not revenge is ever sweet? Both the tabloids and broadsheets reflect the celebrities’ need to out their private lives and, of course, our insatiable interest in their errors.

the Pryce of revenge

the Pryce of revenge

Back in July last year, in life mirroring art, poor old Liberty Ross found that her cheating, director husband, Rupert Sanders, was kissing Kristen Stewart on and off the set of his film Snow White and The Huntsman.  Immediately taking to dangerous Twitter she commented: Not so pretty or so pure after all… to her followers.

Branded ‘appalling’ by her husband in reference to her affair with a rapper, Kate Goldsmith also reached for the keyboard to get her own back.  A series of angry tweets ensued and suddenly dirty Goldsmith linen was flying in every direction.

But is revenge – even offline – ever sweet?  The problem is that there is so much that could go wrong and any satisfaction you get may never be worth the price you might have to pay.  Most crucially though, when you give in to revenge, you are, unfortunately, allowing yourself to indulge in evilness.  And that’s never a good ingredient for the soul.

So the guilty parties on this particular occasion should be eternally grateful that I pulled my devastated friend back from the social media edge.   Without my coercion not to humiliate himself (as well as her), everyone everywhere would know everything about this affair.  There are serious perils with sharing too much anger and so revenge online or in the real world just isn’t an option.

4 ski gadgets

GoPro Camera HD

GoPro Camera HD

levitra non prescription

1) GoPro Camera HD £228(Hero 2) – TV quality footage of some less quality ski moves.  Mountable on your helmet, the camera also doubles up as a great summer video camera as it dives in pools and films the entire tennis court. (Scott Dunn equip their chalets with these beauties for their guests to use).

watch

Motorola Motoactv 8GB GPS watch

2)  Motorola Motoactv 8GB GPS Fitness Tracker £152 is genius.  He uses it for his weekly 10k run in London but it doubled up perfectly as a ski tracker.  Speed, distance, altitude, effort – all the stats you need to justify another beer at the end of the ski day.

 Kodak Play Sport

Kodak Play Sport

3)  Kodak Play Sport £94.99 Waterproof, shockproof, dustproof and totally idiotproof to use. And it’s the world’s first camera to allow you to post your films directly on social media.  Dangerously for self-publicists?

iSki Tracker app

iSki Tracker app

4) iSki Tracker app (free).  The app is a little disappointing as it can’t record your day’s skiing without data roaming on.  The marketing says it’s for the ‘real skier or boarder’….

Luxe Box London: Gifted at gifting

stunning Sophie Hulme bags are now available at Gift Library

stunning Sophie Hulme bags are now available at Gift Library

Giving a perfect gift either requires a heavy hint from the recipient or a flash of divine inspiration.  Sadly, it’s not as easy as it should be and, more often than not, we receive something we don’t need nor like. Of course this is because most of us already own everything that we know that we want and the bigger ticket items are out of friends and family price-range.

So bearing all this in mind, and when a book from Amazon (my default gift) just won’t do, I looked for helping-gift-hands.

my night in with my Urban Goddess Luxe Box

my night in with my Urban Goddess Luxe Box: chocolates, candle, and Sex & the City reruns…

My first stop was the Gift Library, founded by the ex-personal stylist Caroline Stanbury. Her site offers pretty niche gifts for your men, women, children and home.  It’s a joy to window-shop but, I’m sure Caroline would agree, the gift solutions are luxurious and high end so cater mostly for those less price sensitive.

Rococco chocolates and a pot of camomile tea with my Liptease bone china mug for my night in. alone. bliss.

And then I was introduced to product designer and art (branding) director Lucy Heale, who also happens to be the founder of Luxe Box London.  The intro came via my great mates at Mason Photography; Luxe Box is part of StartUp Britain, a quite brilliant response from the private sector to the Government’s call for an “enterprise-led” recovery, and Mason Photography snap away for  StartUp Britain on a regular basis.

Lucy’s start up business idea interested me.  And then when she sent me my very own Urban Goddess box of goodies, it interested me even further.  Designed for the city girl to wind down at home, it arrived on an evening He was out and I simply couldn’t wait to get the Smalls into bed.  In my box of treats I found:  a box of Rococco Champagne Truffles, a Thorneback and Peel Notebook, a Wild Lavender Candle Jar and a Liptease Bone China Mug.

The next morning, I quized Lucy about her business:

Why do you think there is a need for Luxe Box London? Stylish women (and men) today want a gift box that offers something more, something exclusive, filled with stunning, seldom-seen products.

How long ago did you launch your business?  Luxe Box London launched just over year ago with the Urban Goddess Box and it’s been ‘all go’ ever since. I’ve put a lot of work into product development, and am set to launch additional boxes later this year including my Mum & Baby box and The Baker box.

Where do you source the gifts? Everywhere and anywhere! I started by scouring shops and trade-shows in London, but now I’m approached by suppliers and new designers from within the UK. Once I’ve established a shortlist of my top 25 products, I look at the styling and how they work together as a gift-set.

What’s the worst present you’ve ever been given?  I have had a couple of pretty bad gifts but I’m not going to name any names!

Who/what inspires you?  I love the idea of bringing incredible British designers together and showcasing them to consumers. I am inspired by walking around London, popping into new shops and talking to people about their ideas or businesses.

Do you make bespoke boxes too?  Each box is designed around a certain theme, but the sender is able to customise which products they would like to add in.

Who would you LOVE to make a box for?  Maybe I could design an extra special Mum & Baby box for Kate Middleton?!

Luxe Box to win

Each Luxe Box is hand packed and comes with wrapped, tissue & seal
