Don’t You Dare… Sharky & George!

Sharky & George team at Selfridges

Sharky & George have only been around for 10 years but they are already an institution for any parent who has a child/children needing entertainment.  When I first heard about the childish, ridiculously-energetic team they were based at Quo Vadis offering a party-like atmosphere downstairs so that a certain type of parent could eat their Sunday brunch in peace.  I wasn’t one of those parents – but only because it was fully booked for months on end.  Yes, Sharky & George were a MASSIVE hit from the outset.

Three years ago, Small shared his 4th birthday party with a pal of his.  The other mother and I booked a couple of the team of ex-Eton boys to wear the pants off the 30 hooligans we’d invited. And it worked.  Thankful parents picked up their exhausted kids and then promptly booked the BIGGER boys for their forthcoming parties.

A month or so ago it was Selfridges’ turn. The marketing team there wanted a slice of the kiddie-loving action.   Except to tie in with their silent theme, the boys were booked for a silent disco in the kids’ department and I was dragged along by Mini who is always looking for a reason to dance.

And now I hear that the latest I hear is a book.  In fact THE book to get us Mums through a long not-so-hot summer.  It’s

put your hands up baby hands up

hands up baby hands up

called Don’t You Dare (£12.99 on sale 3rd June) and George sent me an advance copy for reveiw – of course, I can confirm it’s going to be a lifesaver.  While I had his attention, I dug a little:

firstly, how old are you and Sharky?  Both just turned 30!

when did the idea of being kids party entertainers first come to you?  And why?   We never really planned it, but after playing a water-based prank on our housemaster at school when we were 18, as ‘punishment’ he asked us to do 2 hours of games for his 6yr old daughter’s birthday party. She was scared of the local “funny man”, so we did the party as older brother figures rather than performers.

how many parties has the team now entertained?  6,250 so far!

how do you chill out after a particularly hectic party?  Eat some birthday cake, swim in a river, bob around in an inflatable dinghy (sometimes on the Serpentine….shhh) or lark around in the park.

where do your ideas for the kids come from?  Mainly our imagination with a lot of help from children at parties.

do you try ideas out on friends/family?  A bit, but it’s more fun to try them out in the office or at parties.

most ridiculous party ever?  I think it has to be either 600 children for an Alice and Wonderland themed Christmas party for an insurance company OR fourteen x 16 year olds for a secret agent themed whole day in London involving proper spy equipment, bugs and tracking devises, high speed ribs up The Thames, two helicopters, an elaborate kidnap and a chase ending in storming a Cold War bunker with paint ball guns to rescue the hostages. phew!

Don't You Dare - Sharky & George's new book

Don’t You Dare – Sharky & George’s new book

how many in your team now? 8 in the office and 80 in the party team

why a book now?  isn’t this selling all your ideas?  Why not! The book is not full of party games, it’s aimed at 6-12 yr olds and has a beach games chapter, woodland games, classroom games, fun stuff to do at school and highly mischievous pranks to play on your friends.

where do YOU like to party?  Sharky: in an après ski bar up the mountains in the alps  George: on the beach with a barbeque

what makes you laugh?  Sharky: terrible jokes. George: playing Butt Darts p40 of Don’t You Dare.

who is your hero?  Sharky: my mum  George: Willy Wonka

what can we expect next?  Sharky & George clothing in the shops.

COMPETITION:  The terribly brilliant boys have also given me two copies of their book, Don’t You Dare, for the most deserving of parents!  For a chance to win all you have to do is ‘share’ this post on my Facebook page and follow me on twitter before Saturday 18th May 2013.  The lucky winners will be notified via twitter on 19th May.

a dose of Caffeine (magazine)

My love of magazines is a little fanatical.  Often I’ll get to a meeting a good 15 minutes in advance so that I can hover and browse in a nearby newsagent.  Who’s written what, whose face is on which cover, what is the hot issue/TV/film/music and so on.  And now, of course, we have some pretty good reads which aren’t sold on the newsstand.  Shortlist, Stylist, Time Out and now Caffeine are all priceless reads and yet absolutely just that:  price less.

Scott Bentley with his Caffeine at Kaffeine

Never one to refuse a proper coffee in an independent coffee shop, I was doubly keen to meet Caffeine’s founder and creative director, Scott Bentley, and to hear his thinking behind this reasonably cult latest addition to the valued freebie magazine market:

What is your thinking behind your mag? To engage with someone who has made the decision to go to an independent coffee shop, then help them along their coffee journey.

Who reads it? Anyone who wants to learn more about coffee

Which mags do you regularly read? I don’t really read mags very often – I generally look at the pictures and layout, but I’ll look at everything from consumer titles like GQ and Glamour to more niche titles like Kinfolk, Elephant and Collect.

What has inspired you to launch? The business model of Shortlist and Stylist and my passion for wanting to help people learn more about coffee

coffee beans

coffee beans

What makes a great coffee? About a 100 different variables from the bean, how it’s roasted, how it”s ground and extracted. The water quality, temperature and pressure to the milk fat content, texture and heat. any many more things?

Are you a coffee snob? I’m not a snob, I just like good coffee and life is too short for bad coffee

How many do you drink a day? usually 2 or 3.  If coffee is good, you shouldn’t feel the need to drink gallons

Why hasn’t someone else published a coffee culture mag before? Or have they? There are a few trade mags but nobody in the UK has launched a magazine for consumers before

Who WON”T read this magazine? People who don’t drink coffee or those content with their venti mocha-frappa-gingerbread-and -caramel-flavoured latte with cream and sugar

How late in the day can you drink coffee? Generally I wouldn’t drink coffee after 6pm

Who would you love to have a coffee with and why? Kylie, do I really need to explain why?

Where is heaven? On my bike in the country on a mid summer morning

Scott loves his Loakes, except his are green.

Scott loves his Loakes, except his are green.

What makes you furious? People who ask for advice but don’t really want it

Who is your hero? My dad

Fav film? Un Homme et Une Femme or Top Gun

Fashion lover or hater? Lover

What was the last item of clothing you bought? A pair of green Loakes

Best book in the world? The Secret Race by Tyler Hamilton

I met Scott at Kaffeine 66 Great Titchfield Street, W1 where you will find copies of Caffeine as well as damn fine coffee!

The Caffeine app £1.49 (with additional content not in the print edition) is now available for download.

Brit beach life on the Isle of Wight

Aged 22, I was really quite opinionated.  Degree in hand, I came back down to London (from Manchester) thinking I pretty much knew it all.  Except that of course I had to live at home and get a job.  And, even then, the job would be at the bottom of that very long ladder.

And while I was on that first rung, I met my namesake.  Em & Em we were called as we worked by day and partied by night.  Actually, she had to cook by night to justify a swanky studio flat in NW8, but once she had served up, we headed out.  Anyway, what was really amusing was that this ‘other Em’ was EVEN more opinionated than me!  Together we had everything under control.

20 years later and we have now lived a little.   Both much more chilled but, unfortunately for our Hims, still pretty much right about everything. Anyway, she wondered if my clan might like to join her clan for a Swallows and Amazons-type weekend on her Isle of Wight.  (I say hers as she has literally spent every summer of her life on the island.)

Back in the days of old, Seaward Lodge had been an emotional purchase – out of sheer love for the island’s sailing and Brit beach culture – between two families and now they ‘allow’ renters to enjoy their view.

And what a view.  From pretty much every room in the house you feel as if you are on a boat out at sea.

The weekend was bliss.  In total we had 5 Smalls but we hardly saw them for dust.  They were crabbing, running up and down the beach, making daisy chains in the garden or playing in the nearby adventure park with crazy golf course.

We ate and laughed and ate and laughed in local cafes and pubs by day and then hungry mouths devoured the big pie I had made, frozen and chucked in the boot of the car.

And then we slept like logs. Waking up to hear the waves… and some smalls playing on the wii downstairs..

If you too fancy a little of this view (or the sea air), then get booking Em’s house through Wight Locations.

If we’re both saying it’s amazing, then we MUST be right.

Seaward Lodge sleeps 10.  It has a big dinning room table, a separate playroom as well as large living room and is literally on the beach.  A short walk will take you to Seaview village where you’ll find pubs, restaurants, corner shop, pharmacy, post office and even a Thai takeaway.

We took the car on Wightlink from Portsmouth – Fishbourne which takes 45 mins.

R. S. Currie: more than a toyshop

the view from inside R. S. Currie, Westbourne Grove

the view from inside R. S. Currie, Westbourne Grove

When is a toy shop so much more than a toy shop?  I suppose when the building and its contents have a story to tell.  Small and his friend were delighted to be invited along to review R.S. Currie,105 Westbourne Grove, but were obviously totally unaware that, at the turn of the 20th century, R.S.Currie & Co (owned by Mr Jack Currie) had supplied classic cars to the inhabitants of Notting Hill.

None of this is THAT amazing.  But what appealed to me is that Tom, the owner of this toy shop, is Jack’s grandson.

Love Hearts...

The shop site has also been a Victorian tea and dancing parlour as well as a scooter business but Tom just could not bear to see the state of the building so started to hatch a plan.  A toy plan.

And then R.S.Currie & Co, Purveyors of Fine and Magical Toys, opened its doors on the 13th December 2009. Since then it has clearly become a HUGE favourite with locals as both a brilliant party venue (at the back) and a one-stop-shop for Christmas, birthdays and anything in between.
